Yes, I am prepared. That's the main thing you have to think about about this car... the maintenance... and there is one more thing... we have one life and I want to LIVE it. That's why I want it.

I have an E92 M3. If budget permits I would dearly love to add an E63 M6 to my collection. Because V10.

That engine wirh straight pipes is epic. Even Ferarris lose to the sound it makes.

if you live in an area with easy access to long stretches of highway and plan to take advantage of it, that E63 is supersonic

It’s a felony motor. Because as soon as someone who isn’t some kind of v10 audiophile tells you they love it, you know they’ve committed at least one felony moving violation. It doesn’t really show its stuff until you have a chance to enjoy it really working hard and that doesn’t happen until well into triple digits because it whips past the last 2k rpm so quickly in the first couple gears. It’s nothjng like an AMG 6.2 that can be enjoyed (and by enjoyed I mean futile attempts to put power down, heh) on any given oneramp

I just sold my M5 after 5 years and $45k in repairs, all covered under warranty. The warranty was about up and I would not feel comfortable owning it without a warranty. The M5 was special but the M3 is much more enjoyable day in and day out. Things that I miss from the M5 are the HUD and the amazing active seat bolsters. I do not miss the SMG, the E92 DCT is everything the SMG should have been.

Every problem of E63 M6 is forgiven becauseV10. If I had $40K, I would get it right now.

The M6 sounds great but I have never liked the E60 M5 or the E63 M6 looks wise. I think the e92 is just plain sexy. So e92 all day for me.

Dang dude, you are pulling at my heart strings. I've owned an E92 M3 DCT, E90 M3 manual, E60 M5 SMG, E63 M6 SMG.

These are two of my favorite cars of all time.

Thoughts on each....
They are both gorgeous in their own way.

The M6 is love it or hate it. I loved the droopy eyes and profile. But it MUST be black / black. Its the "big daddy" on the road, the V10 has unlimited power. The rush to 8300 RPM is EPIC. You gotta put on a tubi exhaust. I had a Dinan, E-Race, and Tubi. E-Race was mind blowing awesome but just too loud. Dinan too quiet. Tubi perfect. Its a very comfortable car, handles decent but not great. I just bought an R8, and went with a V8 because the M V10 sounded so much better than the R8 V10 I couldnt deal with it.

M6 reliability seemed to be worse than the M3. I LOVED the SMG. The manual doesnt match the V10 power delivery. It was pulled out of the 5 series. Nothing like the S6 setting smacking you in the back of the head when you floor it! The "pause" between shifts is so awesome.

I had a couple M3's. Both excellent. I just loved the muscle car feeling of the motor, the intake noise at 8k is EPIC. I put in an upgraded intake. The trick is you have the windows up, sunroof open, and it was intake induction noise eargasm. lol. I will admit, after having the V10's, the E92 around town never could quite match the V10 w tubi noises. The M3 had to be pushed pretty hard to get the great sounds going.

Lastly, where will you be driving. If its a cruiser, than the M6 w exhaust. If its a sportier drive then the M3 will be best suited.

I have an excellent Indy. So that would help with my fear of M6 ownership costs. If I take ownership costs out of the equation, I would lean towards M6. V10 plus Tubi is exotic car levels of power and sound. But I loved the E92 M3's. But the M3 has to be manual. The DCT is TOO smooth, it lost the raw edge feeling of the SMG. Felt too much like an auto, which led me getting bored of it. SMG beats you up, its raw, and has personality. Just never drive it in auto and you'll grow to love it.

Good luck man. I almost bought both of these cars for the same reason to stash away. I ended up buying an R8 for the V8 sounds. So I went a different route.

I've spent a decent amount of time in a 6mt E60 M5 lately and MY GOD. What a car.

Properly modded E9Xs sound very very very well... but the V10 is simply in another league.

If you only had $40k, you couldn't afford a couple years of maintenance on that V10, much less buying the car also.

I agree, the looks of the E60 M5 did not grow on me after several years. A set of HRE's made the E60 M5 bearable but the E92 is just so much better looking.

I had the regular Tubi on my E60 M5 and it was TOO QUIET. Maybe I needed the Tubi Rumore.

V10 reliability is awful compared the E92 M3 (and mine is supercharged!). The pause between shifts is a PITA in rush hour traffic. DCT is so much better and makes the M3 so much more usable 90% of the time. SMG easily adds 2-3 seconds to 0-60 times when you are not at redline. Basically in the M5 you were either doing 0-60 in 4 seconds or 8 seconds. Nothing really in-between. It got old after a while. It was great on the highway above 55mph though.

I love my E92 but for this I’d get rid of it. In a perfect world I would be able to keep both.

I'm a heretic against my own religion here, but I think the SMG is the transmission to get on these, a) because they're not rare and B) because chopping one up to improve the stock car isn't such a bad idea because they're $5 at the local "NO CREDIT CHECK NO DOWN PAYMENT" used car shyster lot and C) WOT redline S6 shifts. Shame the 6-speed (deservedly) gets the future classic treatment from folks, because they're both good at different things

Having owned the SMG, I would say go with the 6spd. So many times I wished I could just rev the engine to hear the engine by just dropping the clutch. Also, the 6spd would be much better in rush hour traffic, lol!
SMG is definitely the more unique transmission though but the hard shifts were too much on the 1-2 shift and caused major traction issues or the traction control would bog the car down.
