Custom underbody brake ducts - aero question
I have the OEM splitters on my car which means it blocks the usual location for a brake duct inlet. I decided to put my limited CAD skills to use and design a duct that goes under the car and scoops air up. Pics below.
My question for the experts. Will this actually work? Is there enough air passing under the car for this scoop to pick up meaningful amount of air? Do the splitters divert air out of the way? The design is a 1.5" x 3" rectangle that morphs into a 2" circle. |

You don't need a scoop. Just a NACA duct should work and you can buy those easily in various sizes. Assuming there's room above the tray to mount the ducts. A scoop is also much more likely to catch on something and rip your whole undertray off.

NACA ducts definitely do work, but from my experience are much less effective overall than duct collecting air head on. I imagine this location you have in mind will work out nicely. Good luck!

it will work, but a less complex solution would be to mount it to the felt splitter face.

Yeah the original idea was to do something like the nasa duct and splitter face that roastbeef posted, but given the location of the duct, I worried there wouldn't be enough airflow picked up. Especially since I'm going to do a 2" hose.
I'm gonna print these and try them out. Stay tuned. |

Another idea to your approach. Vorshlag has been producing these brake deflectors similar to the Porsche designs on the GT cars. I've been running mine for about 6 months and they've worked great so far!

Here's my setup with PureTech Sweden backing plates and MLT Engineering undertray. Simple but it works. Thought of adding a GT4 lip for a cleaner look but the added clearance helps when going on curbs at the track.

It will work, but the question is what's on the other end of the ducting to make use of that air? Shit, my car has a brake cooling intake almost exact like that from the factory -- but it has very smooth, injection molded duct directing air right onto the rotor hat...it's not just blowing air into the wheel well.
