Harry's GPS LapTimer Pro for iPhone

Anyone else use it? I used it this weekend over at Buttonwillow, using only the built-in internal 3G-based GPS (no TomTom or Garmin or Magellan GPS attachments) and despite that, my lap times were only off by 0.1 (compared it against the timing I purchased). Not bad for an iPhone application. Wondering if anyone else uses it with a GPS attachment, and how much more accurate it is.

I'm about to use it. I'm trying to get the wifi OBD adapter so that I can layer in actual stats from the car.

I ran 2:11.154 based off of timing, Harry's GPS said I ran 2:11.1 at my best.

The instructions suck, I know. The thing about the app is, you just turn it on, hit "I accept." on the legal disclaimer, then go to Racer's mode. On the top left, you'll see a little wrench. Load the track that you want, then just exit that screen. Leave it on Racer's mode, don't hit Go or anything. Just drive onto the track and the app will automatically activate itself and take lap times.

I messed it up last time because I was hitting Go and stuff, but you aren't supposed to touch anything, the timing auto-initializes itself.

Just make sure that you have the track that you are driving on downloaded.

You can do that? I didn't even know that, I was too confused trying to figure out how it works. LOL

I have Harry's Laptimer. The timing is pretty accurate and the data is very good. The GPS attachment will make it more accurate as the iPhone GPS has a bit of lag in it. In the data logs you'll see the speeds are a bit slower than actual speed because of this lag.

For the price, it can't be beat. I do love the video feature too.

Here is me at Thunderhill a couple of months ago.

^That's really cool, how did you overlay the data onto the video? Or did you use the video recording mode in the app itself? Also, how do you get data and video mode at the same time? Same thing, just start video recording and drive onto the track?

Curious to see if I can overlay the data onto my GoPro video.

Also, what GPS attachment do you use Z K?

....Thunderhill looks fun....

I don't have any attachment on mine. Just using the built-in GPS.

All you do is use the built-in video feature. If you have the track map loaded, it'll start and stop recording video for you when the lap starts. The videos show up in your iPhone photo library. In the App's lap listing, it'll show which laps have associated videos. When you view the lap details, it has an option to "Overlay" the video. Once it does that, it generates a new file in your photo library that you can export. The problem with the app is that it only records video for every other lap... The App can overlay data onto other video files as well. You have to make sure that the start and stop of the video clip is perfectly matched.

Alternatively if you don't care for lap times, you can just not specify a track and have it record video with data. You have to start and stop the video manually.

Thunderhill is very fun. Lots of high speed sections and sweepers you can carry speed in. Buttonwillow is fun too, more tight, technical and favors smaller cars. Too bad it is further away for me.

^Very cool! What kind of OBD II connector do you use to get that? The KIWI wifi thingy? Or is there something else?

At the bottom of this page the two compatible adapters are listed.
http://www.gps-laptimer.de/Compatibility.html

I want the OBDKey WLAN but they are sold out and on vacation so I'll have to wait. Also, the video that I posted isn't me driving - It's ^^ that guy.

I just realized this is me LOL!
I did not have the car set up properly in the app so the red line and gears are messed up. I tried using it again thursday at red meat and race fuel but it was so hot outside that the phone overheated and crashed after a couple of laps if I tried to run the GPS and OBD II scanner at the same time.

I've had the same overheating issue using the App on hot days even without OBD logging. It seems to do okay on colder days.

I'm hoping the upcoming iPhone 5 will solve that problem and the issue with only getting video on every other lap.

Otherwise this app is ridiculously good for what it costs He even makes an iPad app for data evaluation.

^I know the question wasn't aimed to me, but I use this mount sold at Target. My buddy got one at a different Target than me, so if the same mount was at two different Targets, hopefully it'll be at more locations.

Forgot the name, but it had a suction cup that you twist left and right to make it tighter or looser, and came attached to an adjustable ball joint with 3 clips used to hold the phone in place. Worked really well, phone never fell out or anything.

It was a cheap ebay windshield mount. It's decent for video but ideally, I'd like something that is more steady with less shake and rattle noise. But not bad for $5.

Mine is similar to this:

I use it once so far with the tomtom mount. I was disappointed by the accuracy based on the google earth output. I had the default compression on so hoping removing that will fix it. Besides that the app is cool, video looked good. Like other said, he records every other lap which is not ideal.

Is there any explanation for the every other lap issue?

something to do with the app saving each lap individually.

Here's one I recorded at Arizona Motorsports Park. The explanation I heard was that it has to drain the buffer after one lap, and then it can't record the next lap.

I use the TomTom mount, and the times seem quite accurate.

Also, I did try the Kiwi Wi-Fi OBDII connector, and was pretty disappointed with it. When I connected it, Harry's lap timer would quit after one lap. Also, there is a bit of a delay with the RPM and gear information, so that information on the overlay is not that accurate.
