I remember seeing something about BMW research putting capacitors under the "running boards", that strip below the doors from the front to rear fender. This was to store up electrical energy in reserve for when the electric (hybrid?) motors needed it for stronger acceleration. When I get home today I'll try and dig up the magazine where that appears.

That was the X3 EfficientDynamics Active Hybrid, shown in Frankfurt 2005. Its so called "Super capacitors" were located in the rocker panels and good for additional 40hp.
