Sacrificing style for safety?

I know this is purely a matter of personal taste... but for those who don't yet know, the headrest design is being changed on all M3's to a new active headrest design... great for safety, but I think it looks pretty horrible!

See the pics below... the new design is on the right. Yuk!

I wonder if it is possible to swap it out for the previous design?

No offence... but that sounds like a bit of a Health & Safety response!

My point is simply that the design could have been a lot better, the new one just looks awkward somehow. I for one would be happy to sacrifice the (very small) improvement this may make to safety to keep the old design!

+1

I don't think they look bad at all, and if they're safer than the others, win-win!

I guess the difference is that my neck is still worth protecting

I'm with you man I think they look like crap. Looks like they were taken out of an 1980's shit box. Keep the old design BMW.. I understand being safer but come on.. at least keep the design the same. Stupid liberals!

Not a big deal in my opinion. . .the overall design of a single headrest isnt going to make or break a deal for me. . .

I can see, safety is important, but a bit more thought into "style" could have helped.

I'm assuming this is for US models only.

Those really are hideous looking. Nice find!
+1, finally found a reason to be upset I am getting an '09

I knew someone would see the light eventually... as I said at the start of my post, it's a matter of personal taste but I don't like them!

@ Gearhead999s - I've had some muppet crash in to the back of me at around 45mph a few years back (before active head restraints) and my neck is just fine... my head didn't even fall off! :P

@ Lazlo - I'm afraid it looks like this will be for all markets! I got the PDF of the BMW international site... also has the Euro seat bottoms...

Interesting. I had never heard of this "active headrest" design. I assume it works the same as this.

Hopefully this doesn't interfere with putting LCD panels in the headrests.

Ditto... those are pretty dang ugly. It's like a big lego block on top of an otherwise nicely sculpted seat. Oh well.

Why couldn't they make them look like the old ones? Can I have Euro bottoms at least?

Noob question, what exactly do the new headrests do? How are they active in a crash?

I think they tilt forward to prevent your head from snapping back?

In other news, BMW decided to redesign the front of the M3 for crash effectiveness. Here what it looks like now...
