Removing an E93 M3 Head Restraint

I searched everywhere and it was not answered. With a little playing around I figured it out. The E93 convertable has a different head restraint or headrest than other E series vehicles like the e90 or 92.

I wanted to remove and replace the head rest riser cover as it was aged out and scratched up.

To get the headrest off to be able to slide the riser off, move the seatbelt to the side and look for a small plastic panel on the back side of this part that sits up closest to the seat itself.

Use a plastic pry bar and remove it gently, the tabs break easily.

Behind it is a single hex screw. Remove it. Then pivot the seatbelt guide away from the seat assembly. Now the headrest can slide out. If its been in for a while it may have some rust holding it in. Spray some wd or other lube carefully so as not to mess up the interior.

All that is holding the headrest on was that single screw. It feeds into the cavity on a metal flat arm. You dont have to dissassemble the headrest at all, it comes off in one piece.

Once you have the headrest off, two hex screws on the side of the riser cover and it slides off. You may or may not need the Styrofoam formed piece inside but I replaced mine as I was in there anyway. Hope it helps!
