Question Anyone else have an EV in the garage?

Do any of you guys have an electric vehicle in the garage alongside your M3? If you do, which model is it and how to you like it?

My wife and I bought a Tesla Model 3 a few years ago. Even though I love the manual CTS-V that's "my car" and replaced our E90 M3, I find myself taking her Tesla more frequently that the V. Some of it is wanting to keep miles off my V, but it's equally true that the Model 3 is quieter and more calming thanks to its electric powertrain. I also really like the "self driving" Level 2 cruise control on long highway trips.

Don't get me wrong, my gas-guzzling manual wagon is a keeper and the Model 3 isn't, but sometimes I just want a nice appliance.

Up until last month, the Model 3 was my favorite EV. It's surprisingly practical considering its size, and it's decent enough on a twisty road. But then I tried a Tesla Model Y SUV ( my review is here ) and found that most of my complaints with the Model 3 -- bad blind spots on the A-pillars, stiff ride, noisy highway ride -- were resolved with the Model Y. So now I have a new favorite EV...at least until I try a Porsche Taycan or Audi e-tron GT! 😂

I'd love to hear what you drive when you just want an appliance!

Best,
Mike

My Model 3

And the Model Y which looks nearly the same!

I’m not ready just yet to get an EV, but I do like the Hyundai Ioniq5 tho.

We got the wife a model Y that was delivered early this year. She really likes it and I think its alot of fun. With gas prices and our other cars being the E90 M3 and a Raptor, it's the car we end up taking more often then not. The instant torque and one pedal driving is really nice. Wouldnt mind a Taycan sport turismo or something along those lines for myself someday..

2021 Model Y I bought last year new.

I could make $10K+ on it because I paid $51K and new base Model Y's are now $66K and I still wouldn't sell it because what it offers is so rare and unique. I now have very little interest in gas cars besides the special/unique/cool ones.

$9 to charge the car and have 275 real world range (roughly equivalent to .70c a "gallon"), dead quiet, so convenient, torque that makes most cars feel slow. Tech that's very usable, insanely well thought out software.

You could say I like it way more than I thought I would, and will never would go back to a gas car for daily driving duties if you paid me to...

The Ioniq5 and Kia EV6 are both super cool designs. I'd love to try either!

I feel the same way. EVs as dailies are amazing!

Definitely. My M3 lives the garage and only comes out to play on occasion, and the Model Y only goes in the other bay to charge and lives outside otherwise. My passion for the Tesla is purely logical, financial and born out of practicality, not passion and enthusiasm. It's a perfect tool for the job and is treated as such.

I've owned it for a year now and its gotten one wash. I have no desire to detail it and keep it perfect, all that energy is towards the M timepiece.

I only drive the model y on the street, and autopilot is amazing for long boring highway drives. It is the least stressful vehicle to drive, and driving fast cars isn’t really fun around Seattle anyways…the entire police budget is spent on giving out speeding tickets.

Totally agree with @nelium on the logical reasons for the tesla, and I don’t really wash it either. It’s rained so damn much that it stays clean enough.

In my opinion there is no world where EV and gas will live together long term. The more you buy EVs the faster ICE dies. Which is not a bad thing of course.

The goal of automakers is to stop selling ICE and only sell EV. Not to offer ICE to the people who still want them.

Eventually I plan to keep a ICE performance car in the garage (forever) while driving a electric car as a daily. There is no replacement for the sound of a ICE motor, especially something like the S65 and other good sounding engines.

Wife has a Tesla Model Y, while I have the M3 and X6MC.

Agreed with previous folks comments - easy to drive, relatively quiet, and instant torque helps keep things interesting. And definitely use her car more now that gas prices are where they are.

Lease is up in 18 months - so really looking forward to options that will be out in that timeframe. Porsche may have some great options at that point, and if Audi were able to do EV version of their Q8, I'd be all over it!

I've have an Jag I-pace and recently tested the Taycan. To me, EV's accelerate pattern makes the passenger dizzy (less so to the the driver). I just can't fall in love with them even though they are still quick taking off at the red light.

A lot of people also just lift off the throttle in EV’s instead of smoothly (and only partly) lifting to modulate regen braking. It is extremely nauseating/annoying for passengers.

Yeah, I feel like I can get my kids car sick quite quickly especially considering the off-the-line torque.

It's not a passion choice for me either. But I love the comfort and ease of use!

Is it just me or is anyone also a fan of how the Model 3 drives? It has great front end turn in and amazing powertrain. I did not like the ride comfort and lack of noise though.

I have a 2018 model 3 and my wife has a 2021 model y. I agree the model Y fits me better and I prefer but the model 3 has full autopilot and that make traffic much less stressful. Rented a Porsche 911 last year and had to get a gas sports car and now I’m hooked.

We have a lifetime to eventually drive the golf carts.
I intend to enjoy shouty naturally aspirated Porsche and BMW engines while they are still available.
