SYT Shadow has done about 8 of them (his own cars and helping others). I did mine 5 years ago and helped one other person. There are a bunch of DIYers on the forum and there will be a lot more now that you can buy these cars for $20k or less.

If I'm not mistaken wasn't shadow getting his flights and board paid for by certain individuals he helped? I'm really thinking about tackling this and saving a few bucks in the process, Especially since I have access to a base auto hobby shop

He should get something for his time and expenses. But he also imparts knowledge to people by working with them and helping them become better DIYers. I learned by getting people to help me, sometimes paying them something. And I have helped people (thoughI have never taken any money). Military has great auto shops. Go for it.

@jhanksevo if you're a handy hobbyist and have access to a hoist it's very doable don't be intimidated. SYT's diy is excellent! he is the diy OG, I followed it and did my own. I think it's fascinating that ECS took the time and spent the money to put this excellent guide together. I think as pointed out on this thread that there will be a lot of diyers in the future tackling this job as the cars are switching hands and getting cheaper. Apparently ECS plan on selling a lot of bearings to warrant this guide, it's a great production. Good luck on yours, you can do it!!

Wow what a detailed and nicely photo'd DIY!
Notice they want the plugs to come out, assumingly to let compression of when turning the crank. Curious, is there really good reasons to do that with the shells well lubed? |

thank you so much for this. I am soon to be in the market for a E90/92 and keep going back and forth between finding a good one with the bearings already done, or doing it myself. Much appreciated!
