Guys, during this procedure, I can't help thinking everytime on how awesome is this DIY guide, excellent idea of the member SYT_Shadow, great help to a huge amount of people. Thanks alot to him and to everyone who is always here answering questions and sharing knowledge. This is BMW!
About the subframe bolts, the guide says 6 bolts, but I found 2x 16mm bolts and 3x 18mm bolts each side, which sums 10 bolts total. Am I misunderstanding? |

The subframe thing just depends on what you call a subframe bolt vs the reinforcement plate bolt. But it doesn't matter |

Also, I attached the sub-frame info. There are a total of 8 fasteners for the sub-frame and 7 for the reinforcement plate.

Large flat head and pry the gizmo apart. It will come apart - and make sure that you have secured your steering wheel so that it will not move. A simple bungee cord will work.

For now I focused the money on changing the bearings. The plate will be the next acquirement. By the way, what you see that is the danger of not having it, during street driving? Okay! Trying that tomorrow. |

Maybe a local shop could sell you a flat piece of 1/4” aluminum and you could make one. Or you could weld up an X brace out of steel or aluminum.

I'm posting images of the engine mounts, in awful condition. May have never been changed, 12 years, 41,000mls. I'm also posting pictures of a hose bracket I found broken in front of the ac compressor. Can't know what part number of that, and don't know what hose is that for. Helps are welcome. |

A metal hose clamp could replace the broken one. Something like this:
https://www.lowes.com/pd/Hillman-2-P...E&gclsrc=aw.ds Or you could make one out of a piece of flat steel bent and drilled. The idea is to reduce movement so it does not move enough to rub something or does not stress any joints or connections in the piping before it turns to rubber that can absorb movement. |

Hey guys. I don't have a torque wrench, so I'm borrowing it too. I've already taken off one bearing, and now I'm thinking: do I need to stop the job and go for the torque wrench, or I can put the new bearings on, and tight them up with some torque but not too much, only with a short tool, so that I can spin the crank and do the others, before I get the torque wrench to torque them all correctly then?

You should tighten them hard with the short tool if you want to rotate the engine. Even hard it'll be way less than the required torque I hope you are putting the caps in the right way around. They only fit correctly one way. |

If you insist on rotating the engine with untorqed rod bolts at least pull all the spark plugs. A pro would have enough feel to judge torque enough to more safely do this but a pro wound also have the torque wrench before starting and torque each bolt to spec as each bearing is changed. I would stop and wait until I had the torque wrench.

Make sure you get a good torque wrench. I have found that most click style torque wrenches are not very precise. If possible, get a good digital one.
And as others have said, be careful in there. It would be best to get the wrench before you continue with the work just to remove that variable. Happy wrenching!! Cheers,

Amazingly enough, the plate does not look too expensive. No way for you to get someone to ship one to you? Cheers,

So, I followed your advise, and got the torque wrench before moving forward to the others bearings. Actually I've got two, one is made by Tekton, the other is FL Feeling (chinese).
I don't know about their calibration, so I'll try to check the torque with both. What you think? Quote:
Brazil's got a bad industry, and a bad importing policy. Who understands? That's why the bearings (BE) are the only thing I can afford now. Last edited by jvictormp; 03-25-2020 at 04:47 PM.. |
