Hi all,

First, I am new to this thread, but I have a 6MT '05 911S and I am trading her in for a 6MT 08 M3, which has been built and is waiting to board a ship to bring her here to the states. So hopefully, I can qualify for membership in this illustrious group.

Now for a question or two for those 08 6MT owners who have received their vehicles. When I test drove a 6MT a couple of weeks ago, the clutch was so much lighter/softer than my 911 that I was scared I would stall the car. It was surprising, and I don't quite remember my '02 M3 having quite that much softness. Granted, as soon as I got back in my 911 it felt like driving an old Jeep it was so stiff, so I guess I adapted quickly. Question is, how is it for those of you who have driven it for a little while now? Do you even notice the clutch?

Second question is about the power in 1st. I found myself feeling like the test drive car was not very responsive in first. I probably took it up to about 4-5K before shifting to 2nd. As soon as I hit second, I could feel the power kick in and it was great. Anybody notice this behavior? Or is it part of the the break in phenomenon that I have read about with cars feeling underpowered until after 1200 mile check up? (BTW is this true, or just an urban legend, that the dealership release something at 1200 mile check up that lets the car hit its stride?)

Also, I have driven manuals since I was about 10 years old (a while back now) and love them. I have read a lot of great reviews on the DCT and this is the first time any review of a system like this made me think, "should I have thought about it more before I went with my default 6MT choice? " Now, please understand, I am a HUGE manual fan. Would never regret getting it on any car. But I thought I should admit I am actually impressed with what I have read. Not having driven one, however I have no real basis for comparison. But if someone here does have a comparison, I would love to hear what you thought the highlights of the 6MT and the DCT were from a 6MT driver perspective (not a flame war, just a comparison for those of us who are 6MT fans).

Lastly, I have read a few reports that seemed to indicate some problems with shifting at low speeds or when shifting into reverse. I am not sure what the circumstances were for these reports, but I am certainly familiar with more difficult shifts on my previous cars at low speeds especially when the car is cold. For those of you with some experience, is this pretty much the case, or are those comments by other posters actually indicating that the M3 has worse shifting characteristics at low speeds than other performance cars? (Personally, I did not notice this on my test drive).

Thanks!

PS I have to say I am really excited about getting my 6MT M3. When I test drove the car at the dealership, it was the first time in a while that I had driven a car that actually scared me (in a good way). The adrenaline rush was great!

It is quite a bit lighter than my E46 M3, but as you say, your leg adapts quickly. After 1,400 miles I am well used to it.

I can't say that I've noticed that. First is geared pretty low, so shifting in that range will mean you run out of steam quckly. Once you can use more revs I think you will find it more responsive. There is not pre-first service restriction on power.

I, too, was somewhat intrigued with the DCT, but did not have that option when my car was built. Maybe next time on my '14 turbo hybrid M3.

I haven't noticed any issues I can attribute to other than break-in and personally learning the feel of it. It is true that harder you drive the smoother it feels, though.
