Fuel economy in the E90

I've heard on here that it's pretty bad, but we certainly don't buy M cars for fuel economy and I def understand that. That being said, how bad is bad? I'm coming from a 4.8i X5 that I average anywhere between 13 -16 mpg. Is the M gonna be worse?

Gonna be right in line with that figure you were getting with the X5. Probably a little better but that's it. I rarely think about the mileage.

in line with EPA estimate figures, 6MT can help you squeeze a bit more out of it. Best I've gotten is around 26 mpg on highway at a maddeningly slow 50 mph.

Nice. I am an aggressive driver as well. I know guys with the 4.8 X5 that get 20-22 and I always think to myself, to drive it like that why do you even have that car lol? So it sounds like I will be basically the same if not a tad better. That's good news. Thanks guys!

My 4 mile commute to/from work contains no highway. I get 10-12 mpg. Not kidding.

I've seen 20+ on the highway.

Average 14-15 mostly city driving, short commute. With true highway driving 20-21 is probable, at least with DCT.

That sucks dude. Not the fuel economy, but such a short commute makes it hard to enjoy driving her. I love the fact that my commute is 25 mi each way. 80% highway, but some fantastic winding country roads as well. Love unwinding after a crappy day at work by wrapping out my car on those roads.
I should add that I am referring to 6MT. The X5 is being replaced with an E90 6MT on saturday. Just curious what fuel economy changes I will see, if any. Not that it matters either way, I'm just curious. Thanks again for all the input guys.

50-50 in terms of time spent or miles? If the latter, then, that's pretty bad...

I would say time spent, live right outside of NYC near one of the major tunnels. So anytime I need to go somewhere in NJ/NY I end up spending half the trip sitting in stop and go traffic.

On a side note, I opted not to record my last track day mileage where the car's computer returned an impressive 7 mpg

outlier, doesn't count, also should be able to deduct from odometer.

Interesting. My 09' Z06 gets 22mpg driving around town, and nearly 30 mpg on the highway. 7.0L (427ci).

My airport car (07 black Ford crown vic police interceptor) gets about 17 mpg.

If my soon to be bought M3 gets the same as the Ford, I won't care.

Someone suggested I look at the MB C63. Talk about a fuel hog, 10 mpg! No thanks!

Same issue for me. Same distance commute to/from work and most of my time is spent in the city. I get about 190 miles out of a tank of gas. I also have yet to reset the MPG gauge in the cluster since buying it - I have 6300 miles now and it reads 14.2.

My driving is pretty much even mixed in that I spend about 50% of the mileage in "city" driving and 50% in highway driving. We carpool so highway driving for us is a lot of 75mph with the cruise control set. I get 16mpg. Not calculated by the trip computer but using actual gallons pumped vs. odometer.

Pretty bad, IMO but about what I expected.

My biggest grip isn't so much the fuel efficiency, per se, but the fuel efficiency combined with a very, very small gas tank means I have to fill up a lot. That kind of sucks.

I've had fuel inefficient cars in the past but usually I'm still able to get at least 300 miles on a tank before filling up. I'm not running the M dry but I'm only getting 200 - 250 before the gas light comes on.

BTW - 6 speed MT

Consistent 14.1 - 14.5 mpg for everyday local driving.

23.5- 24.5 mpg for pure highway trips.

I don't know how you're 4mpg higher than me both city and highway in very similar conditions. Maybe you're DCT? Maybe I drive like a jackass? (That last one is not so much a question as a statement of fact )

I use BP 93 and haven't reset my average mpg computer in a few hundred miles. I do have a bit of highway in there. Shows 12.5mpg. Eesh.
