It's by law that you aren't allowed to drive something this powerful at the age of 18, so you won't find any insurance company that's going to insure you. You essentially will be doing something illegal, so insurance should be the least of your worries.
There has been some extreme cases where people have been allowed (Exemptions) to drive such a powerful car at that age but you'll definitely have to state your reasons vigorously, and even then insurance probably won't be possible. On the bright side, your very lucky to have had the opportunity to drive an M3 at such a young age! *Jealous* Last edited by Vitabrits; 08-13-2010 at 11:12 PM.. |

As far as I'm aware, IF the car is registered in a company name then you automatically gain automatic exemption for work purposes. This works only if you are an employee of the company (obviously). However the onus is on you to prove the car is being used for "work" purposes if police were to pull you over. This could simply mean providing the number of your boss (dad) and for him to verify that you are using it for work.
Try RACV for insurance, won't be the cheapest but they will probably insure you. Hope this helps EDIT: See attached paragraph from the Vicroads website regarding exemptions for prohibited vehicles. "Exemption to drive a probationary prohibited vehicle 1. Automatic Exemption The Road Safety (Drivers) Regulations 2009, automatically exempt a probationary driver, from the probationary prohibited vehicle restrictions, who is driving the vehicle in the course of his or her employment and at his or her employer’s request or is self employed and an Australian Business Number (ABN) is in force in relation to the person's business. No exemption document is required from VicRoads in these circumstances. However, the onus is on the driver to provide evidence to the police if requested. A person is not permitted to drive the vehicle at any time for social reasons or reasons unrelated to work. In these cases the onus is upon the driver to provide evidence to the police that his or her driving is work connected. A member of the police force who is the holder of a probationary car licence and the holder of an approved Driver Certificate Endorsement for a vehicle of that class is authorised to drive a probationary prohibited vehicle in the course of duty. No exemption document is required from VicRoads." |

Wow!
Since by law here in the States you can pretty much drive whatever the hell you want once you have a license tell me more about the "Power Laws" of Oz. Is it total HP, TQ, kg/HP, or what? What are the regulations like, and to which ages do they apply? (Seriously, you can be 16 and drive a Z06 or Porsche GT2--not that you won't kill yourself in 5 seconds, and your parents should be tarred and feathered for letting some kid do that, but legally there are no restrictions). Any "old man's laws" too? No way IMO some 90 year old guy should be driving a 500 HP monster either (but no laws against that here either). I'm not saying the laws you have are wrong, just that I find it curious since its open season here. |

DO you have tickets or accidents? I can not see why you can not get insurance on an M3 at 18? When I was 16 a long long long time ago I had a ZR1 and my name was on the insurance with state farm. I pay 780 every six months on my M3 but I pay 1200 every six months for some reason on a hard top mercedes.

Sorry for hijacking this old thread but a potential M3 owner here with a few questions for insurance.
So looking for comp insurance, I'm 42 and have never had an accident or claim. Quotes coming in around $1400 which is fine...issue I am having is the companies I have contacted so far only giving me a max pay out of $32k. Are people just under-insuring their cars? Also, weirdly if I put my partner on (37 years old again no claims/accidents) some won't even insure us. We both been driving since 18. Any recommendations? |

Hopefully it’s not your daily driver or only car otherwise that won’t work. But you can get a stated value policy with them. Of course, no clue if they operate in Oz, just a suggestion
