I don't know about that dig race.... The M4 should have pulled ahead.

Sorry for bringing back such an old thread, but I wonder how a Supercharged E60 M5 will stand up against an M3/4

One thing that we can all agree on (unless you're in denial) is that the M5 sounds 100000 times better than any M3/M4 ever will. That V10 is to brutal.

The gear ratios of the E60 M5 SMG are so much better than most other cars above 100mph. I remember seeing a chart that showed the advantage the E60 M5 has over other cars above the 100mph due to the gearing and 8k rpm motor pushing it. It explained very well why M5's could pull cars with more hp and lighter weight on the top end.

The v10 is great. Unfortunately it ended up in such an ugly M5.

I need an e39 with S85 swap...

There's always "the era" for any brand.

I feel like BMW's golden era was from early 90s to late 2008, where they were among the best in motorsport (F1,DTM) and adopted bulk of the technologies in production cars just like the Mercs in recent days. In early 2000, BMW M hit a jackpot with E46 M3 and E39 M5, followed by decimation of its competitors using F1 inspired engines in E6x/E9x. It's what got me into BMW in the first place.

Fxx~ is a different generation all together. Much more subtle and user friendly. Interesting? Not so much... tries too hard to beat its competitors rather than setting a standard with innovative technology. Maybe the others have gotten too good.

SMG was actually pretty great when accelerating like this. Around town it was slow and clunky.

This- in S6 mode, the shifts are extremely violent when accelerating hard, like being kicked in the back of the head by a mule. It really is a gearbox you have to get some seat time with to learn how to use properly, and treat it like a true manual transmission car. The first 2 weeks I had mine, I thought I had made a terrible mistake buying the car, but after getting used to it and getting the Euro SMG flash it got quite a bit better. Helps that the previous owner had just replaced the SMG pump and clutch, so it felt infinitely better than the other 2 cars I test drove before purchasing.

I sold mine about a year ago, still miss it. I sometimes think about getting another one and budgeting the money to preventatively fix all the complex and unique systems on the car, but by the time you’re done with bearings, vanos pump, vanos solenoids (which BMW stopped making, so OEM is now $1200 each, car needs 4), updated piston oil squirter, and then everything associated with the SMG, it becomes a very expensive project and it’s money you’ll never get back, the cars aren’t worth shit these days unless it has really low miles. An E90 M3 makes so much more sense, and adding a blower gets you even more insane top end power.

And yet, there are days where I find myself cruising YouTube, stumble upon a video of an uncorked S85 V10, and the wheels in my head start turning. What a ridiculously awesome and fun car, not a forever keeper because of the issues with it but everyone who’s an automotive enthusiast should own one at some point.

I wonder how the used E6X market would look if they had come with a similarly reliable vanos system to the E9X, and better trans options...Yea I'm a dreamer...

Well stated. Had my F80 M3 for 5 months then dumped it. For the first time in 15 years there's no BMW in my garage. Went and picked up a V8 R8 for the N/A 8k rush to red line. The new M's just dont have the epic top end anymore.

There was something sexy about driving around a 4 door sedan with an exotic race motor in it. The F8x has a turbo just like any other car. No longer special.

I would have kept mine, that's for sure. SMG in stop and go traffic is a nightmare. Remember the E60 M5 CSL concept car from BMW? It had the DCT.

Wow I just looked it up. It must sound insane with the carbon intake manifold too!

Exactly...

That’s why I grabbed this Dinan S3R.

It’s fast, loud and feels untamed...it’s an event just to go for a drive...
Turbo, schmurbo....N/A all the way....

I recently drove the M4 Convertible and I have to tell you it was the most underwhelming M Car I've ever driven in my life. My 1983 533i had way more feeling and feedback than that car. The E60 M5 is a beast as others said. Mine devastated my friend's Gallardo in a 30 mph rolling start and even kept up with a CTSV wagon at a 60 mph rolling start, (Mind you the CTSV had more than 700 hp). The E60 M5 is completed underrated and underappreciated. One day people will see that car for the supercar it was.
