Back up camera install

Has anyone done this in the area? I'm looking at ordering the retrofit kit from BimmerTech and was curious of the degree of difficulty and what special tools were needed for taking off console pieces to get to the back of the head unit.

Ordered the kit. If anyone in the area is interested in hanging out or helping with the install, let me know.

Garage List
Just get yourself a set of plastic pry tools and you should be good to go for the panels.

Sounds great! I placed the order today so I'll let you know when I expect to get it and we can set up an install date.

I did my modmynav w/camera installation. It's more time consuming than anything. Highly recommend you get a set of these to pull apart the console, as well as to remove the pieces that hold the trunk liner in place. I picked up the set @ Harbor Freight, but I don't see them online @ this time.

Thanks, I'll take a look to see if I can find them.

All righty, looks like you'll be good. I was hoping HF still sold the aforementioned set, as I paid a ridiculously low amount for them ($4.xx), but the set you're showing has more pieces, so knock it out

How long did it take you? I'm a little nervous about pulling dash pieces off and cracking/breaking something in the process.

It took me about 5.5 hours the first time I did everything, including disassembling the trunk, and running the lines necessary. Now, I take apart the interior all the time *lol* rather quickly. Just like most things, the first time takes the longest. After that, it's painless. I can't count how many times my dash has been apart/rear seats have been out, etc.

I have the Alekshop kit, and ya it took about 6 hours for me and my brother to get it installed (re-reading instructions, making sure not to break any tabs/connectors. The effort was well worth it, as I use the camera every day to make sure there isn't anything behind me when I pull out. More piece of mind that no small objects are hiding below my mirror sight line.

Exactly the reason I'm installing one on my E92, plus I back into the garage every night and this will be of great use.

Running the cable through the trunk hinge section is the most time consuming thing.

A couple of things I found helpful when I installed my modmynav kit: 1) a wire hanger and some vaseline were useful for pulling wiring through the trunk grommet 2) have some felt tape on hand as I had some small rattles after I reassembled my interior 3) zip tie everything you can, I had some loose wires that would rattle and it took me forever to figure out where it was coming from

Can you post links to what you ordered? I'm getting more and more curious about this for my 2008 E90 M3 (with the "old" DVD nav and iDrive).

Thanks! Good luck too! Would love to see the results posted.

Another recommendation: Since you're pulling something from the back of the car to the front, I'd suggest attaching a piece of string to run parallel to the pulled wire, and leave it in the car. That way, if for some reason you ever have to run something from the trunk to the front again, it'll be a lot less work. I can't say I'm a fan of zip ties, as they're a pain to deal with if you ever have to (re)move anything; I'm partial to velcro tape.

I got the ModMyNav kit and went professional installation since I didn't want to mess up my then-brand new car's aluminum trim. The installer I used said it took his guy about 6 hours but he only billed me for 2 because he's awesome and apparently the ModMyNav guy says if you know what you're doing it can be done in less than 1.

Also, if you have a 6MT, at least in the ModMyNav kit you need to tap one of the reverse lamp wires so the camera knows when to trigger (DCT uses a signal on CAN), so if that's the case make sure to run that cable when you run the trunk cable for simplicity.
