Supercharge an E92 or my house?

Both cost about the same... But I was thinking [rationally] and I figure I would spend the same money if I were to put an electric generator for my house.

With the recent snowstorm and home re-sale value and all that, I am leaning towards the generator for the house.

Would you supercharge a fully loaded 2011 E92 or supercharge the house?

My vote is the generator... Wouldn't supercharging the car basically void the warranty? If so you'd better be prepared to handle any potential repairs along the way.

Also consider that after supercharging your gas and tire expenses will go up.

Come on now. The rational decision is clearly to put a generator on the house. It'll help you in the upcoming cold winter and boost resale values. However, I would still put the blower on the M. Hahaha.

How many times has the power gone out in the winter? I'm from the Northeast, and I can count on one hand how many times I lost power in the winter. I think the generator sounds like an overreaction to a freak snow storm.

forgive my ignorance but why would you slap a generator in a house? Some scare of prolonged outage or the world coming to an end? Seriously I have never heard this for a regular house and family.

Second that. My folks live in NH, and well, they get gobbs of snow and feel no need for a generator. Pull-up the skirt, grab your NFL Huddler, and jump in your newly Blown M3 and head for the high roads man. OR, save yourself several thoughsand dollars, grab a flash light, a good book, some beer, and you'll be fine for the rare occasion your power goes out. Unless of course you live in CT and still are without power. LOL

P.S. You will get more use, and pleasure out of a SC M3, than you would ever out of a house generator.

Why not do both? Just buy a cheap portable generator that costs < $1000 which should be enough to power the essentials in the rare event of an extended power outage then get some boost for your M which is driven and enjoyed much more often

Maybe I am just not in the know, but I can't imagine that having a generator will actually increase the value of the home any more than perhaps by the cost of generator and install itself (and probably not even that). It's not like you are putting on an addition or finishing the basement, right?

What sort of house generator are you looking at? I assume when you say about the same you are talking about $15k. I doubt you would ever get any of that back if you sold your house. Maybe 30% if you are lucky.

I just got a 5500 watt Generac delivered to me today. I got it online for $700 and it will cost me $300 to wire it into the panel. We lost power for 5 days after Irene and 4 days after this October blizzard. Now that we have a generator we probably won't have a power outage for the next ten years

Supercharge your M3 only if you are certain that you will be holding on to it for a very long time. Otherwise, it will be much harder to sell on the used market and almost impossible to trade in unless you remove the S/C and put back to stock. This is another added expense and then you are left with a used S/C which probably won't sell for shit.

Adding a generator to a house will certainly add to the resale value and certainly to the marketability of the property.

You really can't compare these two decisions, however. One is rational, the other is pure hedonism.

Small generator and leaving enough $$ for a s/c may indeed be a good route!

I was thinking on having a full-blown system for the house, but the bottom line is that I just need power for the essentials for loss of power in my house which happens 3 to 5 times a year... Enough to drive me crazy...

But the daily pleasure of a supercharger may be worth the irrational decision

I would sell the 2011, buy an '08 or '09 and supercharged it. Wouldn't cost you much. To do it on a new car that still has maintenance and a warranty doesn't make any sense to me, unless you are rolling in dough. Then the generator investment isn't even a question, you get both.

What kind of generator is similar in price to an SC system? You can get a heckuva standby generator for under 3 grand and spend less than a thousand on professional installation.

I don't see how the two options are comparable in cost.
