For what it's worth I took one look at the DC market and decided if I wanted the pristine late model I wanted I would have to broaden the search. Glad I did. Found exactly what I wanted and made memories on the drive back from Oregon last year.

Still, took me about 3 months and bunch of heartache to find what I wanted.

Also, don't fall for anything on Carmax.

Anybody else feel as if the prices that they see for many of these are a bit over the top?

Be patient - But don't hesitate

I was very lucky - bought one 10 days ago in the color combo i wanted. Keep your search nationwide and have the funds ready and jump on it - don't hesitate!

Seems like the well is drying up on these cars and the good examples are becoming harder to find....as a result you can expect to pay more if a good example shows up.

Had a similar scenario to you. I went from a FBO 335is, to a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee, loved the Jeep especially in the winter in jersey but there was always something missing. Then hopped back into BMW with an M5. Shortly after, I found a perfect example of a E90 M3 (My original dream car), so scooped up both! Two unicorns, couldn't be happier.

Edit: PS once you find the exact spec M3 you want, don't second guess yourself because it is almost guaranteed someone else will be ready to scoop it up.

Just wanted to re-visit this thread with an update. I ended up buying a cpo WRX STI as a daily/commuter car that satisfies my needs (for fun and practicality, I couldn't buy something boring) as my commute went from 15 minutes of local roads to about an hour of highway driving. But.... I still looked every now and then at the M3 market and wasn't impressed with the local market. It also appears to me that it seems like the market might be hitting a price floor: if you want a 2011 or newer, with relatively lower miles, and taken care of/not beat up on, you're going to have to shell out (on average) $30K, often times more.

I'm now at the point that I'm going to continue saving up all while looking at what's out there, but, it is certainly disappointing to see how rare a clean, lower mileage M3 is (especially if you're picky like me and want a stock E92, 6MT, CF slicktop, among other options) without shelling out $32K. Not surprising, just disappointing.

On that note: if you had to sacrifice one option when buying your M3, what would you have budged on?

For example: when the time is right, I'm going to look for a 2011+ E92, 6MT, solid colored interior (none of that black/red, black/gray leather combos), CF slicktop, nav, and CF interior trim. But if I had to exclude an option, I'm not sure which I would sacrifice for all the others. Anybody else have any input?

Honestly,

If you were to skip out one any of the options you listed, I would cross out the interior requirement and the trim. Those things are extremely nominal when compared to the bigger picture.

Point your attention and priorities toward which model you want (e92 in your case) and which transmission, and the color you'd like. All the rest like I said are very nominal. Especially if you hit those requirements and you find a great example. Ask yourself this question, assuming you find a great example with service records and you open the door to find a two tone interior, would you really turn all the rest down? If yes then I'd recommend adjusting your priorities a bit.

Keep on the hunt, and don't give up or give in.

I do agree, all the ones you'll find from NYC look like they've had rough lives. Fucking yellow tint headlights everywhere. and black wheels.

I'm in NY NJ and I found the right car a while ago. West coast car, adult owned, stack of maintenance stuff. Alpine white e92, 6mt, carbon roof, black interior carbon trim, no nav, no tech packs or anything. Super stripper. 74k miles, perfect carfax, needs nothing.. If you're interested OP shoot me a PM, I've been thinking of selling it for other projects

I totally agree with you about needing to spend $30k plus to find a good car that was well maintained. I personally don't think you should be in the market for this car if you want to spend less than $30k, or even less than $35k. Because why would anyone want a car with 100k miles, peeling interior, off color CF roof, etc etc.

If you have $30k-$35k to spend on this car, there are LOTS of good options.

This, and what several others have said. If you spot one in good condition and with low mileage, just jump on it and expect to pay over $30k. I bought mine a year ago from a forum member and probably paid 1000-2000 more than I maybe could have, but here are the boxes I checked in the process:

1. Pretty much a full history
2. <23k miles
3. 6MT sedan
4. Recent oil change, brand new tires
5. Beyond meticulous prior owner who did a PPI and a blackstone sample
6. Exterior color I wanted

As far as confidence goes, I made out about as well as I could have, and that was worth the perceived premium to me. But I was willing to give a few things up...interior color, fold-down rear seats, and heated seats. If you wait for literally every box to be ticked, you might be waiting forever.

It’s fair to say most cars aren’t investments, but if I shared what I paid for some cars in my fleet to what they’re worth now you might change your mind.

Yeah I've been the search. Even with me wanting Alpine White which is considered to be the common color, I still cant find the one I'm looking for. When I do it usually doesn't have the carbon roof etc. I'm actually in contact with someone who has a lower mileage car with 48k. But asking for 32k which I'm trying to see if it's a good price for the mileage. Keeping in mind I have to shell out in the near future for the rod bearings, motor mounts, and throttle actuators.
