Flipping directional tires
All - looking for insight regarding flipping staggered setup. I run mainly tracks that put a lot more wear on the left set of tires. What's the consensus regarding flipping wheels on the respective axels? I run directional tires (PS4s). I imagine there may be some minor impact to drive ability due to the tread design, but generally speaking I have to think the setup won't result in any safety issues that would result in tire failure.
When I rode moto, we used to flip directional tires with no issues. I expect same results with summer performance tires. Looking for insight from those that have tried this. Thanks! |

I don't think the PS4s is a directional tire.
That said, I've run the RE71R and RS-4 in the wrong direction with zero decrease in lap times and grip. I'd advise against it in the wet though.

Basically this, should be totally fine for use in the dry. In the wet they wouldn't work neither as well though.

My understanding is that the directionality of tires is for water evacuation. On a dry track, you probably won't notice a difference.
However, some tires do have different tread compounds in different parts of the tire to aid in handling, so you could potentially lose that benefit.

I think a PS4 is an asymmetrical tire. You can't flip them on the rim but you can swap sides with them.
I'm pretty sure the PS4 has a different rubber compound across the tire which is why you can't flip them.

Correct, they are asymmetrical construction but not directional. This makes things easy -- just swap the entire wheel/tire on the axle. (e.g. move the passenger rear to the driver rear and vice versa) Outer side: a novel hybrid elastomer for DRY grip Inner side: new mix of compound with specific functional elastomers and silica provides excellent wet grip and braking

i don't think direction is important on the track unless there is water.
but asymmetrical tires are meh since you can't go inside out

Correct, but tires don't wear evenly on both sides of the car, in my experience.

Since most of the tracks I run are heavy on the right hand turns, swapping the wheels on each axle will still prove beneficial and improve tire life. Appreciate everyone's insights on this!

For sure. But lasts even more when you notice all the outsides are worn after a number of events.
