extended warranty..no brainer...

if you are going to keep the car beyond 4yr/50k assume the extended warranty is a must have.....could be $4k+ but given this is 1st year production + all the electronic sensors etc., wouldn't it be a high gamble not to have this car under warranty?

April edition of Consumer Reports (the car edition) disagrees with you. They state on average, extended warranties (including cars) are a waste of money

The prices of the warranties are set so that BMW makes money. So by buying an extended warranties you're betting on bad odds because BMW sets the price so the odds are in their favor.

I guess it depends on how much that "piece of mind" is worth to you.

This is first year in the USA but 2nd year for the rest of the world? Hopefully they got rid of most of the kinks already.

paid 3300 fo rthe waranty on my e46 M3. it paid about 1800 in repairs. BUT I then sold the car with one year left for ABOVE KBB private party.

paid 2200 for a warranty on a 528it. warranty paid out 2400 in repairs, then sold the car for 4k over KBB PP with one year left.

so.....it all depends.

a few small things, (water pump1500) can add up.

if it's $4K thats really $5K (when you factor in interest on a loan and/or lost interest on the investment).

IMO if it doesn't cover $5K in repairs than it's a waste of money and I'd rather pay as I go than pay $4K in advance.

$4K is a lot of money IMO.

Of course, you can wait util the original warranty is about to expire before you purchase it. Only potential drawback is if the price goes up.

BTW, my dealer quoted $4,875 for the warranty, $1,995 for the maintenance.

the maint warranty is only good if you keep the car after 50k. but if you do Iwould bet (based on the e46 M3) that service one is at least 900 and service ii at least 2000.

also remember you can add either of these on before the factory warranty expires.

isn't it that you can also purchase an extended warranty from a 3rd party provider? when I was working for a credit union, we used to offer this to our members which took advantage of it since it was a fraction of what the delear was asking for.... the only drawback that I know of (at that time) was that you had to pay for it out of pocket and then submit it to the warranty company who then reimburses you..... at least, that's what I understood the process to be... i guess I have to double check with my CU to see if this is still being offered... if they do, I'm sure it's going to be quite less than what BMW offers. just my .02

Service II at my dealer ran $1,200+ on the E46, but I know wome who paid a lot more at some dealers. Remember that the S65 engine does not require valve adjustments, which was a big part of the cost of service on the S54. It does have more plugs, oil and other stuff, and rates have gone up. Still, I think $2k may be an overestimate for Service II.
