So, I have a somewhat unique perspective on this. I travel a lot with work. I probably drive 50 rental cars per year. Yeah, the S65 has definitely effected (aka destroyed) any enjoyment I may have had from renting cars. Granted, rental cars are not generally well-speced cars in general. I generally get "good" ones because I am have "status". But I am always disappointed with ride, power, handling and I am especially always glad to get back to my M3. Always.

Spoiled...oh, yeah.

I actually laughed when I read the title of this post. My wife and I were talking about this exact topic recently.

When I am already blessed with what I believe to be the perfect blend of style, performance, features, etc (hehe, that actually applies to my wife AND my car!!!!)...how do you top it?

My answer: just keep soaking up the E92 goodness for my daily driver as long as possible (200k miles or so?)...then turn it into a full time track car! Muwahahaha!

This statement, with a little mental creativity, can also apply equally to wife and car.

I'm not a fan of turbo cars to say the least.Out of the list my choice would be either a 2011 997GT3 or a new MY 2015 991GT3.My plan is to keep the M3 forever,I don't see anything on the horizon other than a 991GT3 to add to the garage. After experiencing the s65 in the e92 chassis, nothing really compares as fas as NA motoring under 100K.I will pay this car off in the next 18months and place an order for a 2015 991GT3.Its time to move on from the M3 as BMW has moved on to turbocharged philosophy.

I know how you feel. I die a little inside each moment I am in a rental. At this point, if I'm not driving my car or something similar, I'd just rather let someone else drive. It's not all bad being the passenger. My girlfriend once asked, if women drivers are as terrible as they say, why do I let her drive? My response is so when she wrecks and kills us both, I get to say I told you so in the afterlife (in reality, in some ways she's a better driver than I am, but there's no way I'll ever admit that to her face ).

I'm on the same boat. I've done pretty much everything I've done (N/A) to my car, minus BBK. This is a car I definitely don't plan on ever getting of. So it's either:
1) Get used supercharger, go all out IND/ACM style and get nice interior upgrade too. Then add a car like a Cayman S. M3 will be hammer, Cayman can be the finesse car. Beef up the M3 rod bearings, bushings ect...

OR

2) Keep M3 as is so that is my N/A car, and get a turboed car from factory. M2, F80 M3, 997TT ect...

Can I order #2 please?

Definitely spoiled by this motor. S65 ftw!

When I drive other cars it just doesn't do it for me. Usually I'm tired of a car after a couple years. Going on 5 years now and it still does the trick!

I just wish there was less bearing talk.

Bearing schmearing....you and I both know there are e9x m3's with over 100k on the clock...if bearing clearances were too tight there would be more failures..I think there are external forces causing the damage to the bearings..ie: drivers not warming up car correctly before hammering the throttle(your dealer tune is a good idea!)..forced induction...etc..I mean come on man BMW drives the shit out of the school cars and unless they somehow pay peeps off when a motor blows no one has mentioned those engines failing to the best of my knowlege? I fell in love with the s65 on my 1st test drive in '08 at a koman event at the dealer..drove the car by myself for almost 40min. violated the closed course that was set up...I was hooked and still am.

Yes - there definitely are. We have customers with over 150K on the clock. I personally know of a number failures which involved cars that were stock, never abused when cold, and were serviced at double the factory service intervals. Most of them that I've seen have problems are early 2008 cars, although there were a few 2011 cars. I've just seen way to many of bearing issues for comforts sake. I'm not making a statement about the bearings and saying that the cars are ticking timebombs or anything of that nature. I just think that the number of them that I've seen first hand over the years is too high for my taste. It's really hard to draw the line between hype/speculation and reality without enormous amounts of data. The good thing is that most dealerships/techs that I speak with aren't aware of any bearing issues and haven't seen that regularly in the workshop. That said, I think that 98% of owners won't have issues and will enjoy their S65 for years to come!

Yes, I am definitely in love with the S65

I will most likely make the switch to the M4, but I am not going wholeheartedly . While I don't mind the switch back to an I-6, the turbos are leaving me a bit perplexed. Hopefully ///M has worked some magic to eliminate or reduce lag to a minimu.

Strictly speaking of motors, I feel like the s85 in my m6 ruined me, which is why I was never able to get myself in an m3. Some suitable replacement motors is the boss302 road runner motor, and the ls7 in my z06. Those motors were just as fun if not more, in there own right.

Z06 will rev out to 7500 with a tune alone and can hit 8400 with a sturdier rotating assembly. I know it's off your radar but worth mentioning since it was the last car I had and that car made me feel as alive as the M3 does

i wish the m5/6 was more reliable

I really like the s65, and love the sound, but im very excited for the s55 as well. bring on the new m3.

the m3 was never really a pure track car anyway, and imo is borderline too heavy to match the s65 as perfectly as it could have

I'm thinking about buying an older s2000 so I don't have to put so many miles on the M. The s2k engine characteristics are actually very similar to the s65 albeit a little over half the power.
I miss my s2k. Bought ap1 in '99.

120hp per liter. Is that still the record? Special engine.

My friend lent me his S2000 for a couple weeks when I came back home for vacation. I had always read a lot of good things about the car and I was excited that I would have some time with it. Honestly, I was very unimpressed with the car and its power delivery. I only say this because I am not really a fan of revving an engine to redline to extract every ounce of power, so that left me kind of weary of high-revving engine

Clearly, I would not be on this specific forum if I have not fallen in love with the car through so many rave reviews. My only concern is actually the engine. I know the engine is supposed to be great and so many people love it. My driving style is never to really wring the crap out of an engine. I am just wondering if the S65 would be my cup of tea.

I am not ragging on the car by any means. I love what the current M3 stands for and I wish I could own one to make an assessment for myself.

the S65 is decently powerful engine. so its got more punch than a Honda. high revving motors are made for the track more than the street. where RPMs are always at a high point. to me i just like the idea of that and of course the driving experience. again gives me a special feeling about the car. not everyone can understand this or even care to.

although from what i read its not going to be the engine for you. The S65 is made to rev and rev and rev. it wants you to drive the piss out of it. it calls for a certain type of person.

You need a heavy foot and high revs to properly drive this car. All the torque complainers are people who fail to grasp this simple fact. The power/throttle response button helps some (on street only of course), but it just makes winding the engine up easier, you still have to get those RPMs up.

I feel the new M3 may be more appropriate for you.
