Road test required for Safety Inspection?
Asked two shops here in Pennsylvania and both said they would need to do a road test for the safety inspection. Don't think I have heard of that before. With the crazy snow/ice we got here, I don't feel very comfortable letting anyone road test my car. Can anyone confirm if a road test is standard procedure for safety inspection or could this be just a PA thing?
Might have to take the car to Bimmerworks or peace of mind

I have had my M3 inspected without a test drive in PA, but I also don't think they took the wheels off either.
I looked it up: http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/pdotforms...ubchapterE.pdf (f) Road Test Perform road test and REJECT IF one or more of the following apply: (1) The parking brake fails to exhibit normal resistance when an attempt is made to move the vehicle both forward and backward from a stopped position. (2) The automatic transmission will not hold in the park position. (3) The vehicle is not capable of stopping within the maximum stopping distance prescribed in Table I (relating to brake performance) or swerves so that any part leaves a 12-foot lane. (4) There is a malfunction of the braking or steering mechanism, particular shimmy, wander, pull or another questionable operating behavior that affects safe operation of the vehicle. (5) The speedometer does not operate. (6) The odometer does not operate, except on a motor vehicle at least 25 years old. (7) The vehicle cannot be driven both forward and backward. |

That document also states:
(h) Spacers - Spacers or similar devices thicker than 1/4 inch may not be installed to increase wheel track. That is only 6.3 MM |

Most road tests are around the parking lot to check the parking brake and brake operation. I have never seen them ever go on the road......
But I hear now in Pennsylvania they need to confirm your cars 0-60 time to pass

In PA it has to be road tested. Some places do it and some don't, but when you are certified to inspect cars in PA it is in the book that cars have to be road tested.

I've taken my M3 to local dealer for inspection, usually in conjunction with annual oil service. I always wait at the dealer for them to complete inspection & service. I noticed them drive through the lot, but never more than a mile added to the odometer.
