New M3/M4 reviews are out, thoughts?

Lot of new reviews for the car that replaces our. What are your thoughts? Did anyone decide to part ways with the E9x becuase of what they read?

For me, I just want to see some comparison tests. I've got a feeling the new M's have much stiffer competition this time around.

True. New M's are facing much stiffer competition, and I don't think bmw really improved the new M3 enough to be competitive in today's market. when the E92 came out it was almost as good as the Porsche 911. Nowadays that isn't really the case any more. If someone needs a sedan then the F80 M3 is still a good choice. But in terms of 2 door coupes, I'd much rather have a C7 corvette or GTR instead of an M4

I think the main reason the M3/M4 are going to have trouble is what he^said and the fact that theres really No room for performance upgrades, i mean so they come out with a HFC exhaust, how can you take advantage of it when the car cant even be tuned?
I would 100% for sure buy a C7 or a GTR first, or even other cars.

Problem is that porsche has raised their prices through the roof. Vanilla 911 now goes past $100k in the blink of an eye. 911S is really hefty. The new M4 looks like a lot of bang for the buck. At least on paper the p-cars look vastly underpowered when compared to the M4. 60 less hp and 100 less torque for the base 911. 911S looks closer but it's 50% more $$$ than the M.

Honestly not sure what to do when I replace my M3 in about 16 months.

I'm honestly not sure what I would do if my E90 got totalled tomorrow. I guess I would search for another low option E90 but I would probably end up ordering an F80. I don't see any downside, just a different car. Wish nav wasn't standard but oh well. Each M3 has had a distinctly different character and this one is no different. M cars aren't like the 911 or vette which have been literally the same formula for half a century, each iteration has its very different characteristics from the last with the possible exception of e28-e34 and e36-e46, but even there you have a hugely more modern chassis replacing the outgoing model and on a much shorter life cycle than the vettes and most gens of 911.

Each M3 has been lovable for its own reasons and this one will be no different. Collect them all I say

As for m4 vs m3, the coupe has always been an aesthetic choice for peacocks or big people who need wide door openings, so picking the sedan not only nets you the correct car but now also the correct badge. Win

For me the M3 has no competition. Smallish 4dr sedan, RWD, fast, manual. That is a class of one as of this writing, sadly

If the E92 goes, it will not be replaced with a M4.

The reviews I've read are positive and the car is being well received. From the comments, the car is stacking up to be what BMW has said it would be - the most track ready M car they've ever built. But these are only the first test. There are more to come and, to me, the most important is it's earned reputation. That's going to take awhile.
One reviewer noted the car was a good successor to the E9x Ms. To me, that conclusion is a very premature. Through repeated testing over the years, the E9X M cars have earned a strong and enviable reputation. Looking back, it seems to me, many cars have attempted to make a public impression by comparing their performance against the E9X. Even after the 6 years of production. Whether the new M cars can withstand the long term testing is an open question, which, when answered, will determine whether or not it is a worthy successor.

I would like to drive one before i say anything. I hope they are going above and beyond the E9X and its competition. Just remember gentlemen, the new M3/4 don't necessarily need to have more power they just need to be better on the course/track.

Thats what BMW is all about in my eyes. Those others can have street light to street light.

I am sure you can pay someone to drive a zamboni. Shouldn't be difficult.....follow your dreams.

I will either:

1. Buy a C7 Z06 if I can handle the reduced practicality and increased track running costs (while also having a car payment again.)

2. Keep my M3 for several more years.

My E92 has spoiled me on V8s, and (just like manual transmissions) it's pretty clear to me that the days of V8s are numbered -- especially high-displacement and/or NA V8s -- so I'm going to try to enjoy them for as long as I can. But whatever happens, I don't think my next car will be a BMW, unfortunately. The only things I want on the F8x are the HUD and the weight reduction, but I wouldn't give up my S65 for those even if it was free to do so, never mind paying the margin over my trade-in valuation.

Other than those options, the M2 is kind of intriguing, but I'm not sure. Maybe if I stopped going to the track as often and wanted something that could be enjoyed closer to its full potential just on public roads, unlike the M3 where you'll never have any idea how truly great a car it is unless you visit the track. The only other non-exotic I'd love to own is a 991 GT3, but I'm in no danger of being able to afford one of those any time soon, so not really an option for me -- even assuming that a test drive showed it to be actually worth double the cost of a C7 Z06.

I think the new M3/4 will be a better car for anyone who daily drives it. But for the spirited drives and track days, the E9x M3 is still sublime. I'd love to own both, but hate the idea of sticking with the M3 or BMW again when there are so many other great cars to experience out there. I really need to get myself into a mid or rear engined car next.

Indeed!

E30:
God's own chariot, as you know.

E36:
Downgraded US model, but aged well and many track rats love to race it. Also a perfect sleeper car.

E46:
Visual design highpoint and ferocious engine. Timeless classic, especially the soft top convertible.

E9x:
The governor, or the governor's crazy daughter. Largest engine, heaviest car, unbelievable behaviour near red line. Street legal race car.

F8x:
Quantum leap in technology. Never more luxurious, efficient, or speed-capable.

The new M3 always looked good to me, but I did not like the styling of the M4. As I see more and more 428i/435i on the road, which is starting to grow on me in looks. I am sure the M4 will look great as well.

For me, picking up a 2010 at a fraction of the cost of a M4 is a no brainer. If I had to pick an E92 or F82, F82 all the way. Based on the cost, E92 is the perfect car for me.

The M4 is all about balance and being a good daily driver while still having track performance. The problem is is that the Stingray, GTR, etc are good daily drivers as well and offer better track performance. Most of the reviews are good yet a few of them mention how the car is "cold" and "uninspiring". The previous gen M's weren't always the fastest but they had the most soul and best driving feeling while the M4 is all about electronics to boost track time but it looks like some of the visceral feedback and connectedness is now missing. And we all know BMW will do a LCI and change/improve a bunch of stuff in the coming years so I plan to keep the e92 hopefully forever and get a LCI M4 when the time comes if it makes a worthy competitor to its rivals but knowing that a Stingray, Camaro, GTR, and others will eat the M4 at the track plus offer a comfortable daily driver is not a fun feeling and I don't believe the M4 is the benchmark this generation. The Stingray most likely will be.

The GTR is not a good daily driver at all by definition (not to mention it's about $30-40g more). The Stingray only has 2 seats which is a no-go for many, and none of those cars you mentioned have the fit and finish of the M3/4. It's always going to be about the whole package when purchasing a car and The M3 has always been a great overall package.

A used GTR is similar in price range and being that kids are far off in my future I don't consider not having a backseat as a bad thing. The M3/M4 is probably going to turn out to be a great overall package as it always is but I don't want a great overall package I want a pure sports car which BMW doesn't currently offer. And as a BMW and M fan I'd like my sports car needs to be filled by BMW but they are stuck making grand tourers. Is it too much to want a car from BMW that competes with the 911, GTR, Stingray, etc and hauling around a bunch of kids/groceries isn't a factor in it's construction? The M3/M4 is the minivans of sports cars. Still gonna be my next car most likely! I just wanted something visceral and more of a pure sports car.
