BPMSport E92 M3 6MT Track Car Takes 1st Place in Global Time Attack Street '13 & '14

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
We wanted to share some pictures and information of our sponsored E92 M3 Enthusiast Class track car. Rif is an extremely talented driver that tracks a few times a month, participates in many time attack events, and also for practice to better his times.

Update: Record setting 1:55 lap on Buttonwillow Video:

Vehicle:

2011 E92 M3 6 Speed Manual Transmission

Modifications:
-BPMSport Stage II Tune
-BPM EDC & TPMS Delete + Coding
-Akrapovic Evolution Exhaust System
-Brembo GT BBK, Front and Rear 380mm
-JRZ RS Pro Two Way Coilover Suspension System
-Square tire setup with Volk TE37 wheels, 18x10.5
-Tires: Hancook RS3/Yokohoma AD08R
-275/35/18 and 285/30/18 (200 Tread ware, street tires)
-Platteforme AG Chassis Mounted Front Splitter (added 12/12/2013)
-APR 2D Carbon Fiber Wing

The car is stock otherwise and has not had any weight reduction. - ~3,800lbs.

Track Times:
Buttonwillow: 1:58.2 – record holder by 2 seconds in Superlap Battle GTA 2013
(On a practice run he ran a 1:57)
Streets of Willow: 1:24.1
Fontana Roval: 1:53.1 (before many of the modifications)

Here are a couple shots from the track (w/ one wheel off the ground):

Trophies & Awards:

On a practice run, he came within three seconds of a supercharged M3 with R Compound Tires, Aero, and Weight reduction at Willow Springs International Raceway - Big Willow:

Yesterday he had some additional aero done to the car, here are a couple pictures of the new modifications which we hope will assist in providing additional downforce:

Next year there are plans to gut the interior and turn this into a full blown track car – this will include racing seats, roll cage, and possibly a supercharger.

The times set are also with a stock redline. Yesterday we raised the revlimiter to 8,600RPM and are also testing a couple tweaks to the software which may prevent it from recording the raised limiter. Hopefully the extra RPM will give him an additional edge on the track!

On Saturday we are going to the track again to perform additional data logging and fine tweaking. Rif will be the driver for our E46 S65 build track car once it’s completed.

Here is a video of him in action:

Link:

A few more late night pics after redline testing:

We will update this thread with any changes or modifications to the car/build, plus some more track videos and times.

Thanks for reading!

I'd have to say track testing is the most severe form of testing. The tune looks like it is doing a good job, the rest of the car looks like it is put together well, and obviously the driver is exceptional.

His car is corner balanced and weighed in at 3798lbs.

A couple days ago he broke the NA RWD Street Time record on Buttonwillow, improving on his previous best by two seconds.

Great job Rif!!

Awesome car! If I had the money and space for a dedicated track machine, that would be it! What kind of hp does that thing get? The M3 just seems like it is at home on a windy track.

Question on the setup: Why the 18" wheels and why square setup? Is there and advantage to that over 19"? Is square better than staggered for handling purposes? I'm trying to make my dd (335is) reasonably capable on the track and need to find the right tires/wheel setup and sizes.

Also, no spacers on that car right?

The 18" setup is better for the track - and the square setup gives it a nice amount of grip through the corners (same amount of grip on each corner). We will ask Rif why he chose this particular setup and update you. Thanks!

One other thing to note is that Cody is supercharged (+ on R compound TD soft tires), and that Rif is N/A .

Small update: Tomorrow we are headed to the track in the morning and Rif is going to try to beat the existing record he set last time.

Yesterday we took an in-depth look at the adaptations in his car and found that there was timing retardation of about 3 degrees across all cylinders. This is nothing bad - we've actually seen some stock cars with 7.9 degrees pullback in the past.

As I started looking further into this issue, and how to make the tune the most optimal for his track sessions, I decided to look into the service history of his car. His car has roughly 37,000 miles on it now, and the service records did not indicate that the spark plugs had ever been changed!

The factory interval for this is at the third oil change, so technically this service should have been performed automatically by the dealership at about 31,200 miles. We installed new plugs into his car, changed the oil, and freshened up the brakes.

Rif also had a slight bit of weight reduction by changing the seats to Recaro Race seats, and programmed the car to accept the race seats without warning lights and re-enabled the airbags.

Tomorrow we will be logging his vehicle on the track with 91 octane gas to start to see how the spark plug change affected the combustion quality. We will be logging the car on the track using factory software as well as a tool that we've used quite a bit before called BMWLogger (available from http://**************.com). We used BMWLogger pretty extensively during our track testing of 240E software prior to our release in September of 2012.

The creator of this program was nice enough to offer overlaying video from the track on top of the datalog, which we are excited to share when he is completed. He has also added support to the application for logging air fuel ratios, which is a very welcomed addition.

With the new plugs and weight reduction, (although Rif is using the same used tires from last time), we're hoping that he can set yet another record tomorrow. After that we will be testing and data logging using higher octane fuels to see how much of an improvement can be had there. On Sunday he will be going to Willow Springs as well to test the higher octane calibration on that track.

We will definitely keep you all updated!
