You really can't tell if the rod journals aren't damaged (out of round) without measuring the crank out of the engine. You also can't inspect the main bearings without a near-full disassembly of the engine. The blue part you mentioned are probably the steel inserts holding the mains in place. Once they turn blue, it's already too late and your crank and block would be damaged (in every one I've seen to date).

Man, this has been an exhausting and nerve wracking thread to read. Hope the outcome is positive for you, OP!

To be clear, OP never had blackstone done before hand? Or did he and this came by surprise?

Never had any black stone analysis, this came out of nowhere. Been driving the car for 2 days now 150 miles and feels fantastic!

rod bearing replacement and oil dipstick mod

bought my e90 m3 couple month ago with 50k on the clock, concerned noises i had were rod bearing related so had rod bearings replaced and also had the engine mounts replaced and oil dipstick installed. got the car back did the break in, didnt go over 3k rpm for 1000 miles and just did an oil change after about 1400 miles and found alot of aluminum shaving in the oil filter. i looked at the oil that came out of the engine and did not see any shavings in the oil. dumped couple quarts of cheap 5w30 and let it run through before refilling with fresh 10w60. The car also ran fine for the last 1400 miles except for a higher pitched metalic whine but no knocking. im hoping the whine is coming from the oil dipstick sitting against the heatshield. im guessing whoever drilled the hole in the oil pan for the dipstick bung forgot to clean the shavings out of the pan. I was pretty upset after seeing this and asked the shop to do an engine flush and then replace the oil with fresh oil again, however i dont trust the shop at this point since this is not the first time they screwed up. I was hoping if i do another oil change after a couple hundred miles that should flush anything else out.

Thanks. I meant to post this in the blown engine thread since thats where i was posting originally. The car ran fine for 1400 miles while the shavings were in the filter so hopefully i dodged a bullet. at this point i dont know if i should go back to the shop that dd the work or just do multiple oil changes in the next several hundred miles and just monitor it. i just dont trust the shop to touch my car again.

I would return to the shop with some questions..And I would show them the pics with the shavings in your oil filter .
And if they don't know it...You can tell them that shavings can destroy any engine ...

I called the shop and sent them an email with alot of pictures. I also saved the old filter. I ran the car with fresh and oil and a new filter for about 10 miles. No shavings as of yet.

Actually your situation is complicated . If something goes wrong (like rod knock) I said *IF* I would hire a lawyer who is specialized in technical cases .

I know. Thats why im not sure what to do. I ran it for 1400 miles before i checked the filter and found the debris. The car appeared to run fine the whole time except for highed pitched noise that i dont remember being there before but that could have been from the drop in macht snell filter i put in about the same time. i dont trust the shop to touch my car again, however i think they should drop the pan again and clean it completely, flush the engine and refill with fresh oil again. Im waiting to hear back from them before deciding if i want to bring it back to them.

I think you know the answer in your heart - you don't want to take your baby back there. BUT it is probably wise to see if you have any recourse there first.

I'd check the oil pump. I can imagine the impellers and end plates being scored badly. Those shavings went through your oil pump first if they ended up in the filter.

Could be a source of the whining.

I was thinking about the oil pump as well. The shop called me back and told me to me just to drive it and monitor it for another 2500 miles then they would do an oil change. Should i ask them to pull it apart and check the pumps?

A few Aluminum shavings won’t score the steel rotors in the oil pumps.
