CEL question P0172 & P0175

Fellow M3 enthusiasts,

I own a 2009 E92 M3 (approx 45k miles, bought new by me, full maintenance). I've been getting a CEL, that I've cleared a few times. "Service engine soon, Increased Emissions!".

At least once it has returned both codes (Both bank one & two too rich). Subsequently, it has generally returned just bank two too rich. The car is driving fine, but I do get a bouncy idle for 5-10 sec on cold start up. Past the bouncy idle, all is well, except the CEL that keeps popping up. If I clear it, it may be a few days before it comes back.

The car is completely stock except for a K&N air filter that I installed some years ago.

Can anyone give me any suggestions for a DIY diagnosis and fix for this?

Normally, I'd have no problem taking it to my local shop, but I've already had two faults this year that did not effect the function of the vehicle, but served to take some $3,000 out of my wallet. My radio & navigation decided to die. Then I got a transmission fault warning. Car still drove fine, but the gear selector needed to be replaced to remove the warning.

So, this is the third warning that I've had in 12 months that I anticipate will take another $1,000+ out of my account despite the fact that the car still drives just fine.

So, I'm here seeking ideas for a DIY solution. I'm mildly to moderately handy (I can follow directions if available) but only have general household tools available.

Thanks in advance for any assistance,

John

I had a P0175 which ended up being a low fuel pressure sensor. Easy DIY and only $60 I believe.
