1200 service in 150miles -- 2 weeks till service appt?!

Hey guys,

So I have 1050 on the clock, and I call the dealer today to make an appointment for service.

He says the BEST they can do is June 16th. At the rate I drive my car, I'll be at the 1200 mark by this Sunday.

What should I do? I'd rather not take it to another stealership. Would I be risking any potential damage by continuing to drive it and show up to service with potentially 1400 miles?

Just not sure how careful I should be in this situation.

I would keep it as close to 1200 as possible and continue to drive under break-in restricitions until the service is completed.

Had my 1200 mile service done today, I got my appointmnet from yesterday. I wish I could take a run down some of the back roads in your area. I used to live near you, but that was a longtime ago.

Think I can gradually increase after the 1200 like normal break-in would consist of. Some loads up to 6-6.5??

Where, in CT?? Don't feel too bad, they say Florida has the smoothest roads, so I'm sure you don't do as much bobbin' and weavin' from potholes as me!

I think I went a bit over 5500rpm for a sec These rules are making me paranoid although my dealership told me to be not too strict about the break in restrictions. However, this car is really tempting me to go fast. I had friends with me today I was driving them around and they wanted to see how the car performs. In the end they were pretty much satisfied. So far I have 600kms. 1400kms to go....I can't wait for the 2000km service and hit the track(BMW driving school)

Servicing close to 1200 miles is advised...being very late with this service can get you into warranty troubles. If your preferred dealer can't squeeze you in then go somewhere else.

I didn't get my 1200 mile service done until almost a month later because it was the first available appt and the car has been fine. Don't sweat it.

Maybe in the states its not so critical...I know back in E46 M3 days late first 1200 mile services really put off future buyers as in some cases warranty work was rejected because of this service being done with too high a mileage.

I would not exceed 5.5K RPMs until you have completed the 1200 mile service. After that it's up to you.

When I broke in the motor my E46 M3 I increased my RPM limit by 500 every 400 miles after the 1200 mile service:

• 0-1200 miles = 5500 RPMs (no full throttle)
• 1200-1600 miles = 6000 RPMs (full throttle)
• 1600-2000 miles = 6500 RPMs (full throttle)
• 2000-2400 miles = 7000 RPMs (full throttle)
• 2400-2800 miles = 7500 RPMs (full throttle)
• 2800-3200 miles = 8000 RPMs (full throttle)
• 3200+ miles = Redline (full throttle)

I am sure there are many opinions on this, but my E46 M3 did not loose/burn a single drop of oil between oil changes every 7,500 miles right up until I sold it with 89K miles.

A couple hundred extra miles is not a problem; however I would definitely stick to the same pre-break-in-service rules.

Now, if you were going to be over by many hundreds of miles I would say you should find a different dealership, and just wait at the dealership if you have any concerns about trusting them.

No problem, I was 300 km's over when I had the car serviced in Munich last month during ED. Only thing you'll notice is that the electronic reminder warning gets nastier - goes from "Service Due" to "Service Overdue you Fucking Idiot" And the yellow triangle seems to get bigger....just my imagination I think.

Words of a wise man . I got mine done at 1,400+ since I was traveling to bring the car home. And yes, those miles were put on 2 days, so they're probably the equivalent of 500 regular ones, but got it done anyway. No other car manufacturer that I'm aware of requires a 1,200-mile service, or even other BMWs besides M cars. It's pretty much overkill, so a few hundred miles more is not going to matter one bit. But yes, I'd keep driving the car like if it had less than 1,200 miles and it won't matter.

I would. It's really no big deal to go a few hundred over, but from what I've seen lately here and over on the Z4 forum, BMW seems to be finding ways that the warranty can be circumvented. Why give them a reason?

RE: Break in, don't make it too complicated. Make sure the car is fully warm (like 6-10 miles of driving), then gradually increase the revs/throttle as you get towards 3K miles. Pretty much what the manual says. Then have fun.

I've broken in two S65 motors, and while that's by no means any kind of sample, one I ran harder during break in, and one I used the procedure above. The one I ran harder used more oil after the 3K mark than the one I broke in more gradually (when comparing oil-use in subsequent driving after the 3K point). And this is purely opinion, not fact, and there are just as many guys who would swear the opposite is true. I only offer this as you seem to have been following the "by the book mode".

I suspect "how" the break in is done has little to do with the final results (oil use, power) than other factors (how well the engine was warmed up before driving hard, small differences build to build in the engine, etc.). No stats to back that up, just observations since this debate has been going on around here forever.

I would demand that you have it done at 1200 and if they can't get you in I wouldn't risk driving it, this guy was on his way to a 1200 mile service appt and had 1205 miles on it when he left his house, a few short miles later this is what happened.

Moral of the story NEVER GO OVER 1200 MILES, not even by 5 or your M3 could burn to the ground.
