What oil to use?

I've been searching the forums and can't figure out what motor oil to use for my M3 (2011 E90). Depending on the year the post was made, the answer is different, plus there are people talking about confusing advanced oil topics that I don't understand.

Sooo, can we get a sticky on this sub-forum stating what oil is considered best currently? Also can someone respond to me here as well?

Thanks!

The consensus on oil is that there is no consensus. We do all agree 10w60 is the factory fill.

Best is a relative term, hence the never-ending debate.

General rule of thumb: go with what BMW specifies.

At first, I was using Liquimoly 10w60 with Molyslip additive.
But then I found Castrol 10w60 at a cheap price so I've switched back.

This question for real? No offence OP but this engine has been out there for 10 years with one specific recommendation since: 10W60.

If you read through past posts on this forum, you will see it is not so clear.

What could be more clearer than what the manufacturer states?

Based on some older posts, I was under the impression that the original oil specified for the car was no longer available.

Where you find Castrol 10W60 in the great white north?

On a large monitor, the image is really not a full page...

Being cheeky here.

This topic has been beat to death. Don't take it personally. Opinions are like assholes - everyone has one. This is doubly true when talking about engine oil.

If you use the BMW spec oil, and you do not run it a crazy number of miles, then you will be just fine.

Cheers,

Cheers,
Yeah so I think my initial comment is worth considering. For new owners, this forum is really confusing on oil. Even if the answer is "BWM recommends this, but here are some good alternatives", this would be helpful. I think too many people are thinking like original owners. But some people (like me) bought the car without any manuals at all. So an Oil Sticky would be a good thing to clear up confusion.

He sounds pretty sensitive

OP if you truly read thru the COUNTLESS oil threads then you should know that you’re going to get this response. There’s nothing you can ask that hasn’t been asked and the answers aren’t going to change. There is no answer same as there is no answer to which color is the best.

This! I love how people come on forums looking for absolute advice. You will only get suggestions, recommendations, and opinions here based on people either running that oil, reading about that oil, or bandwagon oil people. The best absolute answer OP, is to read the sticker under your hood. Castrol 10w-60 as shown in the pics above. If you don’t want that then use the bmw oil (shell). Oh wait, you already read that somewhere and it wasn’t a good enough answer?
