I've been in cars that could hit that number. Though I wished I had my closed face helmet after getting hit with rocks from the front tires.

First road trip today
Weather was a 10 here in the NW today. 78 in Portland and 70 at the coast with nothing but sun. Took off west for a loop through Tillamook, up the coast to Cannon Beach and back--236 miles. Average mpg at the end was 21.0. This was mostly 6th gear cruising, though there were two mountain passes to cross. Mostly 2-lane highway with some town crawling and a little freeway. Probably averaged 60-65 with a couple blast to 90. I'd say constant 70 in 6th yields a 21 mpg figure. I saw as high as 21.5 average on the computer at one point. Any spirited driving drops that average quickly, though. Not bad, overall.

The way I see it... If you dropped $70 big-ones on a sports car and are now worried about gas prices... you may have been over-extending yourself financially a little. An extra dollar or 2 per gallon should be of little concern to a person that can comfortably afford this car. Just my opinion.

it would be very hard for me to get 21mpg w/ like of the nos. said here, cause I have never seen 6th barely use 5th on my e46 M. The car is a wkend toy, maybe if its for DD practices would change.

Honestly, I'm quite taken aback by the E92 M3's quoted consumptions here.
Just for the for comparison sake, I average 23mpg in the 997 CS (30/70 city-highway). Easily 30mpg with a gentle throttle at 70mph on the highway, city driving at about 16mpg. Track it and it'll drop to 12mpg. However, it could be the way I drive. I hardly rev above 4500rpm on acceleration unless necessary. |

There's nothing wrong with over extending yourself a little to purchase this car as long as you're responsible about it and adjust your other expenditures appropriately.

The way I see it, when you're talking about cars in the class of the M3 - in both performance and price - fuel cost should really not be an issue. Assuming you drive 15k miles per year, the difference between a 20mpg car and 30 mpg car is about 250 gallons. At $3 per gallon, that's $750/yr in extra fuel costs. Even at $5 per gallon, that's $1250/yr more in fuel costs. We're talking about $100 per month!
Anyone that can afford this car and wants this kind of performance should not be bothered by that. If you want to live more green, get a hybrid that gives you 40mpg as a daily commuter. I plan to do that in about a year. |

I have mine on campus at school, a ton of stop and go driven with the 6 speed, I am avg 16.8 on mine right now, it all depends on how your shiftin, ive been keepin my shift points around 2500 rpms (maybe right or wrong) and seem to be benefiting from doing so...also don't worry about the speed limit..i enjoy just cruzin at 5-10 miles under speed limited and watchin people fly past me pissed off, everyone tells me awwww man 17 mpg that sucks, its like a breath of fresh air for me since my last DD was a Hummer H2 gettin 8.8 mpg ....im pretty satisfied, my bro gets 19 around campus in his 335 though
