Editing a music back-up on USB

Is it possible to edit backed-up music on the USB stick and then restore to the car's hard-drive?

My music on the hard-drive is a bit of a mess, with too many duplicates from 2 USB loads, so I wanted to trim it down, and eliminate the duplicates.

I have backed everything up to another USB stick and can see all of the tracks on it.

If I edit here, and then restore, using the "Restore back-up" function via the iDrive, will it work, or screw things up?
