Don't bet on seeing anything reported in these blog/rumor postings. BMW engineers are always testing some new emerging technology. That doesn't mean you'll ever see it on a production car. (even a special edition model)

The rumor mill needs to be tempered with a dose of reality...

If BMW does bring a new model to the United States, it will be very similar in scope to the E46 M3 Competition package that was offered in 2005.

You will never see a true GT version of this car on U.S. roadways. The price tag for such a limited-production vehicle would drive away a large number of prospective buyers.

BMW's pricing structure for the U.S. market is problematic for a number of reasons. The base pricing for a E9xM3 (coupe/sedan) is in the upper 50 grand range. You cannot buy an M3 anywhere else in the world for that price. (not even close)

Adding to the dilemma, is the fact that these newly spec'd vehicles will be very low production in nature. That means you can't make up the difference in volume sales. The track-only version of the M3 GT4 car cost $120,000 euros.

From what I have been told, a 'conservative' estimate on this new street version GT4 will be $100,000 euros. (easy)

For those of you who are not very good at calculating international currency exchange rates, that's $148,689.41 U.S. dollars.

Even if BMW decides to sell these cars in the U.S. market (which has not been decided yet), and even if the pricing is somewhat lower than the pricing of the Euro-spec version...the base price would still place this car well above the means of the average BMW enthusiast. (income wise)

Only a small number of very wealthy individuals would even have the resources to buy such a car. (~$100,000 USD)

With that in mind, I'd be surprised if the managers upstairs (or the BMW accountants) will allow a U.S.-spec version of this car to be built in the first place.

Remember, the car will still have to pass DOT safety regulations and EPA emissions testing. These two hurdles can sometimes discourage a manufacturer, from releasing a 'special edition' version of a particular automobile. (into the United States market)

I call that the three R's. (rules, regulations, and red tape)

This is especially true for European or Japanese based automakers.

Unfortunately, BMW falls into that category.

The best thing that my U.S.-based brethren can hope for...is a 'watered down' version of the final Euro-spec M3 GT4 street car. Expecting anything more than this, will only result in extreme disappointment.

I would assume you also know while manufacturers don't consume the entire day/week to testing, the circuit is often closed in the morning through mid afternoon and later open to the public on these days. If you want to see manufacturers testing their new toys, go up early on a tourist day and hang-out at Breidscheid, Bruenchen, Hoehe Acht, Pflanzgarten or any other of the thousand spots to see for yourself.

Just because you didn't see it when you were there doesn't mean it wasn't there during manufacturer testing times.

@10 seconds you hear the wheel(s) spin for a moment, loss of traction(Karussell is very bonky I know from irl experience) , typically for the //M lsd which tends to 'think 'for a nanosecond or so, with a Drexler or so diff you'd have instant lock.

Manual gearbox.
Standard exhaust.
Not a BMW development driver (full face helmet).
A pretty normal external antenna for 2-way radio (advanced telemetry...??!!)
BMW badges uncovered
Testing with other manufacturers around (or public)

=

Tuner testing aero add-ons (they look like prototypes to me, as no-one would have such tacky struts to hold the rear wing in place).

Or.......BMW testing market reaction to the idea of a GT4-alike M3 (without actually putting a real car out in public) and all of the above is a bluff.

well, I'm not an expert in the field of telemetry so I'm not sure what is 'advanced' and what isn't. But the whoever is testing the car bothered to change the antenna between the one in the photographs and the one in the video. May be it's nothing, but I'm guessing that they a.) have quite a lot of equipment for this sort of thing and b.) are serious about getting the data.

As pointed out by many, it would be weird for a tuner test just aero add-ons on a car with a roll cage, video camera and telemetry transmitter. It would be good if they did that (at least when they say "track proven" it would mean something) but it's a bit extreme isn't it? A rear wing prototype could be tested just the same in a wind tunnel, surely?

The idea of a "competition package" could be much closer to the truth. Seeing that they did it for the M6, it would not stretch the imagination too much if they do the same for the M3. Perhaps just some suspension tweaks and some aero bits... may be...

Hi everybody.

I've been wondering about this for days now, ever since I saw the first link to the pics here in a german M-forum.

Did nobody notice? The rear wing is an adjustable wing, usually found on the 320si (WTCC). Adjustable wings are not street legal in Germany, so there is no point in running them anywhere unless you want to be able to change the aerodynamic balance during a test. Whatever the M GmbH is testing on that car, it has to do with aerodynamics and more on the front end, than on the rear. I would assume, that it is just a future aero kit for the GT4 (which would have to come as an evolution-homologation and has to be purchaseable somewhere) that will create downforce rather than lift.

Regards

Peter

What ever this car is, it is not a rival to the RS5. The RS5 will rival with the standard M3. Remember the M3 is not a drag-car but a track-car. So if the M3 beats the C63 around the track yet having less power and torque it does not have to fear the RS5 even with its 4WD. And if you want a fast 4WD car get an X6 M.

That exhaust does not sound stock to me. Am I the only one to feel that way?

Unhappy

What I have deduced from this thread:

1. The wing is ugly
2. It is BMW testing KERS (Kerosene Enriched Rocket Solution)
3. The exhaust is stock
4. The exhaust is not stock
5. It is a tuner testing something
6. Some guy lives 40 minutes from the track
7. Southlight is still alive

And so I have arrived at the only conclusion there is to this saga
