I spent 3 days last Oct driving the new car on the Nurbergring F1 track and got to take a ride on the 13 mile Nordschleife with one of the instructors at speed. (yes you do go airborne at phlantzgarten!)I have owned an E36 and E46 M3 and have driven both on the track. Let me just say this car blows them away in every way! Have you seen the numbers from Road and Track? 0-60 4.1 / 1/4 Mi 12.5 / Grip 0.98g

Forget what you might think about weight, this car feels much lighter than the E46. We did numerous exercises with the car including a ton of hot laps. Understeer? Forget it .You can toss this thing with ease. We did some autocross type drills and this car is balanced and changes directions with a flick of the wheel. Acceleration is brutal and braking is typical M3. Steering may have been a tad light, but I think it is overblown and you won't notice it 99% of the time. One tidbit, the German guys like to run the normal suspension mode because that adapts to changing loads, whereas in sport setting it is fixed which may not be the right setup for every section of track. You will have to play with it and set the M Drive for what you like best.

Don't know how many of you have heard this thing in person at speed, but believe me you won't be disappointed! Not a GM v8, but more F1 or GTR. I am sure there will be aftermarket systems for those that need to draw even more attention (I had a Borla on my E46)

I thought the 46 was as good looking as it gets, but that really looks dated next to this. Obviously this is subjective, but in person everything is just right. The fenders are flared just like the 46. I would like a different style wheel and probably will look to change this as I did with the E46.
Seats are great and I never felt like I was coming out of it even in the 140mph sweeper on the back straight. Much more headroom, htough this is probably because there is no sunroof.

Bottom line. This thing is sick, much more of a sports car than the E46. It is quite simply the perfect GT. Already ordered mine. Hope this was informative.
From my humble encounter with this same car in Miami, this sounds to me more of what I experienced than what was mentioned previously. I am convinced we will be hearing some of the same critical rhetoric when the next M3 succeeds this one. It comes with the turf of such iconic cars as the M. And like I mentioned in another thread, there is something captivating about the first burst of acceleration and high grip cornering you experience in this car, it will remind you why you are so obsessed with the it to begin with.

FINALLY a review with some teeth! Anyone can pick apart a car, it is so easy. But you have to report the thrills with a little criticism. I was getting depressed hearing all these neg reviews about the rubbery shifter, loose steering, quiet exhaust, low torque,,, you would think this thing was a dumpy 91 Accord from these reviews (sorry ruff). I want to hear a review that tells me about the heart pumping exhileration.
Thanks man, I will keep watching for more like this!

Impressions Part 2

There was a question about the 6 speed transmission in the new car. this is all we had to drive in Germany as the DCt was not available. I have always preferred the standard 6 speed because I am used to it and like to heel and toe. The pedals are perfect for me in this car as they were in really all the other BMW's I have had. I drove an SMG E46 on the track and this is really where it shines. It is way cool to just have to nail the brakes and downshift with F1 throttle blips. In the real world, however, I found the SMG to be somewhat clunky and I prefer to do the shifting myself. I would never need the "automatic" mode so that was not an issue. Recently drove a friends Aston Martin Vantage and while gorgeous, the shifting was awful!

I had no complaints about the new cars 6 speed. I am not sure what "rubbery" means but I found the transmission to be fine on the track. Shifts seemed to be shorter than the E46 and it was easy to drive smooth. The E46 was always a little jerky shifting from 1st to 2nd unless the revs were just right, I did not notice it in this car though I was almost always accelerating pretty hard!

Botom line. This is purely personal preference.Sounds like the DCT will be much better than SMG. For those that want the auto option and a Nick Heidfeld experience do with DCT. For those old school guys the 6 speed is just fine. I hope to drive a DCT car if they get one at the performance center, and if I do I will give my thoughts.

^^ happy to read your review on 6MT man. that 6MTGirl review made me feel like shit about the car, especially the clutch/tranny. oh man that review was so negative man. even if she has nothing against it, she'd say "it was nothing special"

Me, too, especially since my 6-speed is somewhere in the Atlantic. I missed the start of DCT availability, but not sure I would have chosen it anyway.

I have to place an order in the near future. I would never go for the DCT. Manual is the way to go. For this M3 atleast.

You will be happy with the 6 Speed, and you can put the $2700.00 savings (DCT cost ) toward something else!

Solution for you: buy an 2006 Comp pack e46 M3 for a great price, ship it to AA, have them put a stage 3 supercharger kit on and suspension and exhaust, and you will have what you want

You are right that would be a solution. I love the e46 comp. pack, but reading some other possitive reviews made me gain some hope. I guess il just have to wait and drive it. The e92 m3 gtr though looks so stunning. so im guessing the e92 will just have to grow on me.

Guys and Gals, read my lips!

As I said, I have driven the E46 and the new car on the track and there IS no comparison. You would have to have the E46 CSL to come close to the new car. The competition pkg is nowhere near this good. Not sure who is selling this car as being soft? How many of you have driven the car and really wrung it out? I know the looks are subjective and some may very well like the old one better, but go drive one for yourself and don't rely on a few journalists that try to find any flaw they can. We were with the German guys that have hundreds of laps on the ring and all I can say is you should see the grin on their faces! My one lap with them at the wheel on the north loop was worth the trip over there by itself. Besides, in the real world you will drive this thing at about 1/10 of its capability.

Excellent Skierman 64!

You will be mighty happy at 7/10 in this car. The grip with the special Pilot Sports will have you hunting every on/off ramp you can find. Be careful because often you won't realize you are in triple digits. Touch the rev limiter in 4th and you are at 140!

I ordered mine in Jet Black with Fox Red. I was hoping for a true red, but FR is pretty cool, (saw a sample in Germany). I had my E36 in Black w/grey and my E46 in White w/ grey, so I wanted a different interior.

NJ is BMW headquarters, therefore the place of registration.

He didnt want a fast luxury car he wanted an edgy sports car.So the new m3 lost its raw edge. so even though this car is probably even a better car than the e46, it will never feel the same way. Another example was my 2005 330zhp; it feels so much firmer than my 335 and it makes me feel like i am in a real sports car even more than my chipped 335i which is literally so much faster.. I don't know, i just hope that the m3 can be tuned to sound louder inside the cabin, or that they come out with a csl version. Oh and by the way, dont think i am hating on the new m3, it is still an awesome car. I just think bmw has to tweak it a bit more .
blue lemon. didnt you tell me that your friend preferred the e92 over the e63? i think so right?
