Does an Automatic Transmission e92 BMW M3 exist?

Hey guys. I know most m3 owners love the manual transmission but I really want an automatic one for many reasons. Now is there one in existence? Or can one get custom built? Preferably 08, 09 or 10. Thanks

the only choice you have is the DCT semi-automatic transmission.

it is about 2000$ extra

Hmm I read this somewhere. What is this?

Well, The BMW M3 does not have an automatic transmission. It has something called SMG, Sequential Manual Gearbox. As someone previously mentioned there is no clutch so basically it has a manual mode in which you change the gears yourself by pushing the throttle up or down. Also it has a sport drive mode, basically an automatic mode. There is no park, so you have to put the car in neutral and pull the hand brake. Basically, you put the shifter to the right and let it drive in sport automatic so you don't have to change gears. You're very lucky. Its a beautiful car, but I'm curious as to wonder why your dad bought you an M3, if he knew you didn't know too much about SMG. I can't blame you, I'm not used to the whole SMG idea. but great car. have fun.

Because if you wanted a daily cruiser, buy a 335i, I should know.......

The mentality behind your response is one of the reasons why the //M continues to be more and more laden with creature comforts and weight and soon to be turbos, (god forbid you have to drive the car to get power out of it). I'm not trying to hate or belittle you, just letting you know that enthusiasts view the car world completely different then the average joe, but unfortunately, the avg joe is greater in numbers and thus probably has more buying power then enthusiasts, hence why BMW continues to listen to the avg joe more and more. But this site is dominated by enthusiasts, with predictable thoughts, feelings and reactions towards various issues in the auto industry and more specifically BMW.

Heads up warning, this response probably was the worst thing you could have said. Put the flame suit on.........just saying....

Cheers,
e46e92

Yes there is an automatic transmission available. The DCT transmission mentioned earlier had a "d" mode which will drive like a typical automatic and also an "s" mode where you can use paddle shifters to shift on your own if you desire.

Please no comments about the difference between the DCT and a typical automatic, that is clearly not what the op is asking about.

Fair enough, but your reference to DCT as an automatic is very incorrect.

OP,

the M3 comes with an automatic transmission which is called M-DCT and costs around $3000. It does everything you would expect from an automatic transmission

and don't confuse SMG with M-DCT. You inquired about the E92 which is M-DCT only. SMG was in the previous model (E46 M3) from 2001 to 2006. Both can be operated similar to a traditional automatic, but neither are traditional automatics by design and character, especially SMG. But in terms of how you wish to operate the vehicle, yes the M-DCT is what you would want.

because there are many ways to name the same thing...

In reality you will find that the M-DCT transmission is a brilliant piece of engineering that can be anything from a smooth-shifting comfortable automatic transmission to a super fast shifting, neck snapping manual transmission with automated clutch operation.

Read about it and you will understand.

To some traditionalists if it's missing the third pedal (clutch pedal) then it's an automatic. Basically some just refuse to accept the advancement in technology as a viable option vs. traditional (and essentially antiquated) manual transmissions. Funny thing is manual transmissions are all but extinct in the highest forms of motor racing yet self-proclaimed traditionalists seem to always ignore that tid bit as they proclaim manual transmissions as superior. Truth is both have their merits which is why both exist.

I dont know about these new M3s that are going to come out. I don't like the fact that they are putting in a Turbo in the car or even two turbos. I think that ruins the whole car. I mean and I think all previous M3s never had turbos, they were all N/A(correct me if I'm wrong please). In my opinion, I think turbos are a way for car to get cheap additional power.

But back to the thread, if you are looking for a normal automatic that you find in all other cars this is not the car. I think people mis-understand that this isn't really an automatic, but it is at the same time. It takes skill to drive a DCT SMOOTHLY. Anyone can drive it, but driving it smoothly is the other part. I would say test drive it in the city and see how you like it, the car get pretty jerky if you dont drive it properly.
