Holy crap--that's really disturbing... Could have easily been fatal...
I'm surprised the driver reacted as quickly as he did to try & shield himself, as that happened in an instant @ that speed. The track I frequent where I worry abt something like that--is Roebling.

That is crazy. I assume the deer was KIA? Hope it was instant. Between all the trees and deer, you East Coast guys have your work cut out for you at the track. I guess that's one advantage to tracking in the desert.

This was so very unfortunate. A month ago the driver was hit by a police car on the street totaling the 911. He then found a very similar car and purchased it, first event with the new car and the deer picked him
Same event there was a second, much more minor, deer incident too. SP will not do anything about it significant, but pressure is building up and I hope all car clubs join in putting pressure, this is very serious safety issue obviously. http://dorkiphus.net/porsche/showthread.php?t=32914 |

Seeing a deer like that would have freaked me out if I was going flat out on a straight. Us So Cal guys just have to watch out for snakes, rodents, and desert fox then of course you got those pesky DB sound limits at the Nor Cal tracks.

They have deer at Lime Rock. They also have snapping turtles. They lay their eggs on drivers right of no name straight but live on drivers left. I've driven right by a few of them as they're crossing the track.

Reminds me of this..
If I was that driver, I think I would had crapped my pants. I'm sure it wouldn't be cheap, but it seems the property of the track should at least be fenced.

Always wear your visor in the down position.

Dang. Is the track where the instructor died from hitting the tree? I've only seen turtles on track but there have been deer not far away. The turtle got flipped into its shell from cars passing by until a certain E92 driver and turned it into hamburger with the fins on their diff cover. Lucky he didn't destroy his diff.
I know...I need to start doing that. I'm tired of getting hit in the face with pebbles and crap coming off of the car in front.

You can put it most all the way down so there's a small 1/4" crack at the bottom to let air in to start.

Why did the Porsche driver feel so compelled to get out of his damn car after the 911 hit the deer. He tries to get out once and then drives around the other side of the 911 and gets out. His car was not on fire. Stay in the damn car. He just had to go check on things. He could not just sit in his car like he is supposed to. He also could have driven to the hot pit or paddock but did not. He elected to add another thing to hit if someone went off.

It was an epic hit, in the brake zone on the main straight but not very far into it so the car was going at about the highest speed possible.
I didn't see the wrecked car because they loaded out the access road and through the Jefferson (where a student crash at Hyperfest killed an instructor last month). But I was in the pits when the Boxster that took the video came in, and it was really, really wet down from deer guts. Icky, icky. The driver of the wrecked car came back to the pits in a golf cart, not an ambulance, so that was good. And he had a track policy, which is another good thing. Turkeys and deer are just part of the scene on that section of Summit Main (and the other side between "Turn 2" and Turn 3). The corner worker at T1 will show crossed yellow and white flags if he/she sees any milling around, but some times they just run right through while the CW's back is turned. One of the first things they tell every new student on that track is not to swerve. Usually it happens so fast the driver doesn't even have a chance to react until it's over. |
