New battery a few months ago as well. Insurance inspector told me I could put a dead one in there if I wanted to sell the newer one LOL I dont have a dead one to put in there, though.

Rest of the car is stock, save for some minor cosmetics (blanked out front reflectors, black kidney grill, zcp shift knob).
What happened to the weed head in the garage next to you? I assume he has no insurance and it's all through you.

Yes, for now it's going through my insurance. The adjustor told me Farmers may go after the responsible party after my claim is settled.

The garages are from the 1930s. They are old horse barns. There's no insulation, etc. The landlord really shouldn't have allowed the kind of activity he was allowing in there, IMO (Another renter also uses the garage as a workspace, etc.) But yea, the dipshit who started the fire should bear some blame, too. I'm sure it was an accident...he doesn't have renters insurance (and has been unemployed for 2 years) and he lost computers, photo equipment, etc.

My girlfriend thinks I can leverage my landlord for some free rent or something but I'm not sure since the insurance company is largely making me whole. (Still waiting on their former offer, but they did say I could buy the car back for $10k).

How can you be whole if your E9X 6MT M is trashed? The last of a dying breed.

I respect firemen, but in the youtube video, the lead guy didn't seem in any particular rush to get that fire out.

Yea I agree...I guess I just mean from a legal perspective. I'm certainly coming out on the short end here. It's painful, man, but I'm getting over it.

We all thought the same thing. Seemed to be a shocking lack of urgency to me, too. And they stopped spraying water for like 5 minutes...and the fire re-emerged on the roof and was a bitch to put out. Really odd but I've never been around a fire like this, have no idea what's standard protocol, etc.

Stressful, we had a fire once in our apartment and it's no fun.

As for the Firemen., I think they did ok. They basically operate in two modes, full on (life at risk, fire at imminent risk of spreading), or conservative (everything else). It's mostly because they know everything in there is toast already, or damaged irreparably from the smoke and soot, so no use risking something to save 30 seconds.

Hang in there and work through it...

Very disappointing to hear about this, OP, but in the end, it's just a car and it can be replaced.

Take the check and buy another one, or upgrade to something even better.

Thanks, man. Yes, I've gotten to the acceptance phase pretty quickly. It's life. I've loved my time with the M3 but prob time to try something else. Thanks for your kind words.

No question about it, that's a toasty totaled car.

It's a race car in the initial stages of its build.

Let me ask you this... are you willing to allow someone else to buy it for $10k?

Putting me in a bit of an awkward position with that question, because I don't want to sound like a greedy dickhead. I guess the answer would be probably not unless it was a friend. I don't know what kinds of hassles I'd have to endure by taking that route. At this point I kinda just want it out of my sight but hit me with a PM if you like. I'm reasonable and would love to see a forum member have it.

I also might be able to negotiate a lower price from Farmers if I knew someone was for sure interested at $10k...but time is running out bc Copart wants it asap.

If does run without any warning lights but it made some weird breaking and steering noises today when I pulled it out of the driveway and into the street...who knows what's going on inside.

Was it inside the actual garage, or just close by?

It was inside the garage the whole time the fire was burning. A firefighter pulled the car out of the garage once things calmed down. But to be clear the garage unit that caught fire was next to mine. His belongings are a pile of ash now. He didn't have a car in there.

The car, as is, is definitely worth more than 10K, and it maybe possible to negotiate the price down with the insurance company. Assuming you have the time, a place to store the car, I would buy the car back and either part it, sell as it, or get it back on the road

Man... No bueno. Sorry to hear; especially by someone else's negligence!

If you don't mind me asking, what is insurance offering you to "make whole"? I'm curious if they base their check amount off of Blue Book or what the market is actually dictating.

I'm using that phrase pretty loosely, but they told me I'd get however much it would cost to buy the equivalent car at a dealer. I did a search and saw 2008s with similar miles being offered for $30k and up. If they lowball me I'll show them my findings I'd be surprised if they offered me that much but I'll find out shortly.
