Will dealer be able to tell how many times you redlined the engine?

Hey,
I've been wondering about this because i just leased a new 330i and a few of my friends have been telling me not to red-line the car because the dealer will be able to find out and you might get into trouble for it. Is this true or just a rumor that i dont have to worry about? I redline at least 6-7 times a day.

no rumor. very true. they can use your keyfob to check how many times you redline, launch, and hit the speed limiter.

Redlining the car is perfectly acceptable.

If your dealer gives you a load of lip about it, tell them to cite where in the manual it perscribes a maximum number of times to utilize the full RPM range of the engine. Since such a number does not exist, tell them to go perform unnatural acts on themselves and get to work on your vehicle, under warranty.

Those numbers are only really used to check for overrevving ( money shift ) when there is a claim.

Dealers dont generally look at that info

I redline my vehicle almost every time I see a wide open space infront of me...

Thats what I did in my E46 aswell...AND that's why I bought a BMW.

Just make sure your car is warmed up and you should be fine. I don't drive like a maniac, I respect my car - but redlining isn't bad IMO

Along those lines, are there cons to redlining the engine? If so, what are they?

That's interesting. How do you know that? And if so, what about those with Comfort Access who never insert their keys in the key holder? i.e., does that information get transmitted electronically by direct connection with the fob?

The key saves some info, but i dont remember RPM info being one

On cars with CA the car communicated via radio to the key, so sends data over the air

I'm pretty sure those info are store on the on-board computer as well (aside from being stored in the key)

Yup, an amazing amount of info is stored onboard.

Some of this the dealer even cant normally access, but if there is a investigation, BMW can

Is that true? I have CA, and at the dealer a few days ago, the service guy was not able to read any info from my key until I went out to the car and plugged the fob into the dash slot. I think that key had been plugged into the dash slot once or twice, but it's been at least a few weeks.

Isn't BMW using some type of black box technology on board the cars? I know they began using it in the E36s. This was how they started catching on to the "money shift" from track events. They started seeing high g's, high revs, and overrevs... They also used it to deny some of the E46 M3 engine failures early on during the expired engine phase. This is funny because they said some people overreved the car with SMG which is not possible.

Long story short, the car has recording capability, but you have a rev limiter that should keep you safe on upshifts. Nothing will keep you from paying if you mess up a downshift or select 2nd when looking for 4th though...

One more thing. Feel free to use the full rev range once the car is warmed-up. However, the engine will not last as long at full revs as it will at lower RPMs. Think of each engine having a finite number of revolutions you can use. You'll definitely have more fun with it if you use the full rev range. After all it is a BMW...

This started on the E36 M3 from MY96+ when BMW moved to OBD II and Bosch to Simmens control engine management hardware. The telltale was stored as a value called MAXRPM and could only count in sets of 256 (there was at least one example of a dealer telling someone with a blown motor tha the stored value was a number not divisible by 256 and much trouble was had). These Simmens boxes did NOT measure G forces or any other sophisticated telemetry data.

Ahh, so the early data trackers were for RPM only, and the guys at the track were just paranoid there was more.

Does anyone know if they're using the g sensors to record the information being used by the DSC? I read in an automotive engineering mag that GM is doing this with an actual black box like an aircraft.

Big brother is watching.
