Sorry for just getting back.

Only had to do the bearings once.

Just had my original alternator go out on me 3 days ago lol. Already back on the road though.

Something is up. Either incorrect reading or high temps. It was just below the mark between 210 and 300 and by time I snapped pic, dropped a bit.
Considering a full synthetic oil starts to break down around the 240 mark I'd be worried also. Tracking my car, my temps run around the 1/4 past mark. Maybe a lower viscosity oil?

I have been reading people reaching around 270 degree on track on this forum.
I don't get why you guys make it a such a big deal.
I get slightly over 210 too lately, especially easy as it is around 100 degrees during the day in LA.

My E90 I just got today was over 210. 95* outside in stop/go traffic with some aggressive driving. It got as high as the picture in the first post. I'll be following along

According to the owner manual. "When the engine is at normal operating temper ature, the engine oil temperature is between approx. 175f and approx. 250f
If the engine oil temperature is too high, a messsage appears on the Control Display."

Just a data point: On a club cruise today with spirited driving, my oil temp never exceeded 200F. OAT=91F.

I'm interested in the OP's findings, I'm sure the information will come in handy to someone later on. My car is almost always below 210F but occasionally it will show hotter temps, I'm sure it's AC, ambient temp or hard driving related. Seems that there might be something else going on with OP's car.

AC on and a little spirited driving at 89 degrees. Not stop and go traffic. I don't see any reason to be worried.

I push mine out here in Vegas, it's 105-120 F every day out here, never seen it get that hot. I use Liqui-Moly, don't know if that made a difference.

Mine started to run a tad bit hotter after Bmw switched from Castrol to the shell 10w60 . Also noticed that the oil warms up quicker ... I am guessing the shell 10w60 is marginally thinner than the Castrol OR at least has slightly different operating characteristics ... dunno if anyone else has noticed this .... plus ... n this maybe completely subjective, but , the engine feels somewhat smoother when at full
Operating temp with the shell than it did with the Castrol . Mines a 2012, 64K miles bought new. Oil changes every 7-8K after the 1200 and 15000 mile service.

Don't know if this is a coincidence but while cleaning this weekend I cleaned out the oil cooler with the hose flushing out the fins. My oil temps are now a needle passed 210 instead of 1/4" passed. Again this may be coincidence but may be worth others exploring?

Which brand do people here prefer? The Castrol, Shell, or Motul?

I think Motul makes the 10W-60 oil sold at the dealer's parts dept.

That's incorrect --- BMW authorized dealership oil is a shell 10w60 now . Used to be Castrol edge previously till Bmw switched business associations

I wouldn't say mine look TOO high? Thoughts?

Running Liqui-Moly 10W60

Based on the Oil Temp gauge 'marks', the circle in between 210 & 300 is likely 255*C.

First pic is right after 'getting on it' on the highway for about 10 minutes. It looks to be around 230*C

Second pic is after sitting in traffic for a bit and no high-RPM runs for 5 minutes. Slightly above 210*C

For what it's worth, I read the C&D writeup for the new 2018 M5 with the S63 V8 engine and apparently it has a new higher capacity oil pump and new oil pan design.

Looks fine. As long as it's consistent, I wouldn't worry about it. The gauge and sensor are not extremely accurate. I don't know what the margin of error on those is, but 10% wouldn't surprise me.
