Arrow Considering a 2008 E92 M3 w/25,000 miles ~ price check?

Guys,

I've started to consider an E92 M3 6M for as a weekend GT car. While I understand many will suggest a 2009+ for better tech, or even the LCI cars, and NOT going with a 2008 - I'm not into tech (wish I could find one WITHOUT NAV) .

The drivetrain is the same from 2008 on...I've found a really clean 2008 with just 25K. 6M car, lots of options, mostly stock (not a forum member's car). What would you suggest the market price is for a low mileage 2008 M3?

Thanks!

With mileage that low on a 2008MY, I would want to see a detailed maintenance history. Stuff needs changing/replacing due to age, but some people think it's only dependent on mileage. In the end, this is still a 10-year-old car.

And yeah, for that car it might mean it's had a ton of hilariously short oil changes, for example.

Hmm that's tricky. Sounds like a great option though if you want a weekend M3 and don't need some of the updates from later on in the generation. Do you know the colors and options? I would throw out $30k as possibly reasonable without knowing more. I personally base cost of these more rare cars on what is it worth to ME.

If he posts the last seven of the VIN it's pretty easy to plug that into a decoder.

I'd agree that value would be around 30k.

Should be able to tell dealer history with carfax and can't beat this - http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...ghlight=carfax

I've used several times

absolutely... carfax looks good and includes mostly BMW dealership service history. at least 6 oil changes (likely more). plus 2 brake fluid flush and change, etc. nothing unusual.

+1 on ~30K

Also, E92 didn't get LCI till '11

08's have a different clutch design that is more expensive when it comes time to replacing, even going to the 09+ clutch/flywheel. So in the end its a wash, you can look at newer cars with more miles that are cheaper than this one.

If you can get the VIN (or better, the key), any BMW dealer can pull the complete service history which would also indicate if it was ever in for warranty claims.

Love 6 oil changes over 25k. 2 brake fluid flush over 10 years surprises a bit as suppose to be done every second regardless of use (due to mosture). Other then that it sounds like a potential catch OP!

I agree with the ~$30k consensus.

As far as the clutch goes on the 08s, I'm still rocking the original at ~69k miles with countless track days. I'm sure I'll need one in the next 20k or so but it's only an $800 addition for the flywheel.

Sounds like a find OP.

What is the asking price of the car? How did the guys do estimating it's value? And if the car is priced much over that you can use this thread as a bargaining tool :-) And if it's priced lower well, delete the whole thread and don't let him see it.

are you suggesting a 2011, like this example, would be a better way to go?

IMO if you're comfortable in the low to mid 30k range you should go for a newer car with more miles. Grabbed my 2012 6 speed with bolt ons 48k miles for 35k.

That 2011 you posted is a looks about right market wise.

That's too high of a price. I got my 11', loaded, 34000 miles, 1 owner, bone stock, always garaged, 6mt for just under 35k less than 6 months ago. Also came with a second set of wheels and tires.

Sure mine had 9k more miles but it's also 3 years newer. Since they are the same asking price I would have still taken mine for sure. But for like we all suggested at about 30k it would be appealing to buy.

What’s your reasoning or thinking behind this suggestion?

Threads like this take with a grain of salt. Lots of recommendations with no reasoning provided for the OP to ponder on. To me it’s just as important to understand ya’lls opinions than just taking them.

IMHO Don't buy a 2008 //M3. The e9x //M3 cars were a mid-year replacement starting in about the spring of 2008. They were pre-LCI cars with the old iDrive/Nav. But it was the first introduction of the S-65 V8 which made them unreliable. BMW doesnt have a great reputation for designing and building rock solid V-8s. I think the //M3 S-65 V8s were hand built. So the first year saw many bad engines. Your X5 50i is notorious for needing a valve job even with low miles. Also avoid the DCT, since if it fails = $15,000.
A 6 spd MT is alot cheaper to maintain.

If you work on your own cars, then TVA replacement at 60-80k miles will be <$1200, since they are cheap now. Liquid Moly 10w60 oil changes will be <$120 vs the dealership $250-400.

The e92 //M3 Coupes were built until 2013. There was a competition package available in the later years with gorgeous rims. The rod bearing material was changed in 2011 from lead/copper to aluminum/tin. Premature rod bearing failure, especially with high horse power and tracked cars is an issue. Without a warranty, it is a big risk to push these cars hard or to use as a daily drive with very high mileage.

Signup for cargurus.com plus autotrader.com and get a daily list of //M3s in your area that meets your criteria. There are a huge number of //M3 Coupes with <70k miles in every color. Just check the CarFax, which Car Guru does for you. You can get a //M3 car <$30,000, with pricing analyst. Also check the FS/WTB section here on m3post.com for the best maintained //M3 cars. Use bmwvin.com to verify the build sheet from the VIN.

Recommend you look for...
2011-2013 e92 or e90 //M3 Coupe or Sedan with <60k miles
- 6 spd MT
- Competition Package with 359M wheels
- EDC
- Nav/iDrive
- Carbon Leather Trim
- Carbon Fiber Roof
- Best Ext. colors Interlagos Blue / Lemans Blue / Space Gray / Ok White or Jerez Black
- Best Int. colors Fox Red / Terra / Silvertone-Gray / Ok Black

//M3 e9x cars are one of the best cars ever made and are a blast to own and drive every day.

Good luck in your search,

PS I almost bought a BMW 335i M-Sport CPO car online from an out of state BMW dealership and it had a clean CarFax. Turns out that the car was wrecked at the BMW Performance Center track in South Carolina, so that "accident" wasnt reported to DMV and didnt appear on the CarFax Report. Car was repaired by BMW and was offered up for sale by one of their dealerships. The car couldnt be sold as a CPO Car, so it was sold as a Pe-Owned Used Car. HaHa what a joke.
