I would love to drive a 997 and 993 for comparisons.
It's really a matter of preference on feel, the speed is more apparent in the 997, the 991 is more of a gt feel, I love the 991, just wasn't in my price range yet.

What did you finish your fellowship in? Attending life is so much better, I don't miss residency for a second
2012. Living in a more rural environment does help the affordability of a Porsche. Living in NYC or SF would mean barely affording an M3 I'd hardly drive.

Good to see another white 991. Here's mine which is a 991.1 Carrera S. Just in the process of getting a 991.2 Carrera S.

There really isn’t anything less than $85k that interests me over my e90 m3. May want to check out a 911 targa or 911 GT3. Take that back, the Alfa Romeo Gulia Quad is interesting.

I just drove a 991.2 C2S coupe 7MT with power kit. It was special ordered, really nice build, but owner had an ankle injury and had to trade it in on a PDK car with 600 miles on it. I drove it in "real world" conditions to see how I'd like it as an everyday car.

1) It's still a 911. You can hear and feel what each individual tire is doing, all the time. This is good and bad. It seems to shut up on the highway somewhat, but I was surprised at all the comments about how refined the new cars are you'd think it's an isolation chamber now and its' definitely still very sports-car inside.

2) The new motor is just plain excellent. Sound, response, power, torque, you can finally make those giant rear tires feel like they're working a bit. And it's the first turbo engine I've driven that hasn't made me miss the S65. Even the S55 (which I think, is a wonderful engine to drive, haters come at me) is still a little too TURBOOOOOO for me. The new 911 engine feels "light on its feet" for a turbo engine, very fizzy

3) The 991 interior did not jive as well with me ergonomically as past 911's. Give me chintzy and relatively ergonomically correct 996 over button fever even if it is miles ahead on quality and feature content. Also, just felt a little too cavelike. I can see the appeal of the Targa.

4) the 7MT takes some getting used to but it's a good trans. I had trouble discerning gates between 3-4, 5-6 by feel. Luckily consequences are just a jerky shift at any sane road speed even if you accidentally grab 3rd from 7th or something. Surely I'd adapt. 7th gear highway cruise was very relaxed and comfortable in the default suspension settings. Sport exhaust on, all the time, still isn't all that bad inside the car but outside holy moly sounds amazing and is LOUD for a stock turbo car, good work on that Porsche

Overall, I liked it more than any other 911 I've driven. It was the perfect "street 911" build and I would have picked just about everything the owner picked, except I would have gone with Chalk for the exterior, and it was lovely.

But I still like my E90M better, as a package. Which sortof surprised me honestly. I was expecting to be ready to tell them to shut up and take my money.

Im surprised too.

I agree that the 991 is still loud inside (tire noise).

My issue with the E90 M3 is that its just too *busy* all the time. The 991 really settles down and cruises when you ask it to.

I love the interior and exterior of the 991. I ordered an "espresso" interior and the agate grey exterior and it feels like a nicely made piece of luggage.

I agree. Different kinds of excess sensation. was very impressed with the ride they’ve managed with those dubs and the still-no-that-long wheelbase.

Interesting, I had the exact opposite experience comparing my former E92M's to my 997S and 997 Turbo.....perhaps the 991 is different. I felt the nose of both the 997S and 997Turbo were a tad "floaty" and a bit unsettled at speeds north of 100 MPH where the E92M3 felt more planted.

My exact dilemma. I want a 911 coupe for all of the same reasons we all do, but I just can't release my death grip on my M3 coupe. It is just too good of a car. I also don't want to replace my 981 BS with a 911 convertible that is 350 lbs heavier. The boxster is more entertaining at reasonable speeds. And I don't have the garage space for the four cars I have (also have my wife's five series and my daughter's VW bug), let alone five.

First world problems

For better or worse, the 991 is significantly more "integrated" than the 997.

I appreciated the '09 997 6-speed I had, but found it too "no compromise" to commute in. The 991 with PDK is far FAR more comfortable in any situation. But now that I have the 991, which feels like more of a grand touring car, I have been looking to purchase either a 997.2 GT3 or a '16 Boxster Spyder in order to own a sports car that can be reasonably stressed on a curvy public road. The 991 is far too capable, meaning that if I'm on a public street I don't run into car capability- I run into my own appetite for liability far sooner. I don't want to go to jail if it doesn't involve a story I want to tell my grand kids some day.

The M3 is a really good "beast of burden" for track time, auto-X, and the occasional weekend public road drive.

If garage space is a premium, one Cayman GT4 instead of the BMW and 981 would fill a substantial number of those requirements.

-or- you've got things really good now, and you shouldn't let the internet persuade you that you don't.

Hi Visceral. I suspect the GT4 is probably too focused for me (blasphemy, I know). Suspension and seats too firm and ride height too low (scraping). Also more power than I need...especially given the tall gearing. However, if I were only able to have one relatively affordable car a Cayman GTS would probably get the nod because I love the light weight and suspension tuning of my 981 BS and I love the Cayman's design. I would, however, want the GT4's steering!

Agree I've got things really good now...but it's fun to think about!

I had a 981 BoxsterS after the F82M4 and it was, without equivocation, the best handling sports car I ever owned or driven. So planted and visceral and amazing sound right behind you....I can only imagine what a 425HP engine in that car would have felt like. Sublime.

I think you've touched on it for me. I have loved every Boxster I've driven from old base 5speed 2.7l cars on up. The 911 and I just don't jive for some reason. And I really really love the idea of them and appreciate them as awesome cars, but if this one and I didn't get a long I don't know what else to try short of a GT3, but if I'm getting a 2-seater, the Boxster and I already get along great? Maybe I need to try a 993 just kidding can't afford to spend that kind of money on 25 year old car...wait can't afford a 930 C2 either...can't even afford a scale model of a 930 turbo, lol

I would love to see a Cobb Accessport solution for tuning. I'm semi-tempted to do the GIAC ECU tune but I'm balking at taking off my rear bumper and forking over $2000.

Here's a video showing the difference between a standard 991.2 vs a GIAC tuned 991.2: https://m.youtube.com/watch?t=363s&v=Rg8xFlURy_4

Taking the rear bumper off is super-straight-forward. I even did a "how-to" for it on my 991.1TTS for Rennlist. I've changed exhaust components 7 times now. The bumper removal is no longer an "obstacle". I'm a long way from a professional mechanic. Just start with a nice set of Torx from Harbor Freight.

They're Torx wrenches, not ratchets. Harbor Freight has a very important place in any mechanic's heart. Especially if you are also paying for a 911.

Sadly I let the E90 M3 car go yesterday to a wonderful fellow forum member. It was my first performance car and I will always cherish my time with it. I had to offload the M3 to get a model 3 for our upcoming move and the 110mi round trip commute. I'll upload some pics this weekend after picking it up.
