2011 E90 M3 owners...are you worried about resale?

Hi all, I know it's wrong to think about resale value when you are buying a car, but is any 2011 E90 m3 owners worried about the resale value of the car in a few years. I mean, F10/F12 is coming out in a year or so, and most people are going to want the latest and the greatest. Does it make financial sense to get E90 M3 at this point? Would car like C63 hold its value better at this point?

Thanks for your input.

e92

I think my E92 will be better than OK. It will be the last of the M3 V8. At this point in time I'm keeping my E92. Again, who knows and time will tell.

If I were worried about resale I would have leased the car!

But seriously, no. You are paying for the depreciation whether you lease or buy. With the financing rates BMWFS is offering, it was hard to pass up. I had leased my 550 but didn't want to stay on that tread mill. It is the right choice for many, just not me. If my car proves to be problematic, I'll ditch in four years as the warranty expires. If it is holding up well (I drive roughly 10K miles per year) after four years, I'll buy the extended warranty and keep it.

Just my opinion at this point but given the HPFP issues BMW has had on its turbo engines, I think the NA V8 in my E90 will hold up well in value. But we will see...

I see what you guys are saying.

Hypothetically, owning E90 M3 from 2008 to 2011 ( 4 years) should cost you less than owning E90 M3 from 2011 to 2014 (also 4 years) I think. I still see a lot of 2008 M3 going for high 40's, and I don't think there is a chance for 2011 M3 to be worth high 40's in year 2014. Does this make sense?

If I understand leasing correctly, I'm just paying for depreciation over the next x years + interest rate. If I have the funds available, shouldn't I just pay for the car and save myself on the interest rate?

Why not? While I understand the impact of the new model coming I also think there is a hard core base of BMW fans out there who don't want the turbo engine, especially given BMW's track record with them. With that I think there will be a demand for the naturally aspirated V8 and given that I am a low mileage user who keeps his cars in excellent shape, resale should hold up well. The turbo is the primary reason I switched to the M3 from my 550. The new F10 is a great car but the swing to more of a luxury car AND the twin-turbo engine are why I switched.

Only time will tell who is correct! If you don't want to make that bet, lease the car and pick up the new M3 in three years... After leasing my 550 and my wife's X5, we have purchased both our new vehicles and plan to keep them well beyond a typical three year holding period.

Correct and if I have cash available that is only earning 1% or less in a money market fund, why pay 4% or more on a car when the cash is basically sitting idle. Even using the .0018 money factor (I think that's what it is) that the M3 vert is getting still equates to a 4.3% interest rate. Residuals and lots of other factors ultimately determine whether leasing is right for you. For some the payment is a tax deduction. For others it is a way to get the lowest monthly payment, and while the monthly payment may be low, it may not be a very good deal! Your mileage may vary...

First of all, it's a depreciating asset, i don't think E9X M3s will depreciate any faster with the new model coming out versus when the E46 was in it's last year. If BMW is smart, they will have a 1 year gap between when E9X is discontinued and the new F model comes out to ensure the dealers don't cut prices to get the models out the door.

Secondly, based on the previews we've had, it's hard to gauge which one will be more sought after. The E9X will be the one and only NA V8 high revving M3 in the history of BMW.

Finally, the E9X will probably be discontinued 1 year earlier than previous generation and will have less overall numbers than all previous generations.

Based on all this, I personally think the E9X will retain value more than any other previous model and definintely will not decrease more in value simply because of of it's uniqueness. If you really worry about resale value, you should purchase a pre-owned 2011.

I'm driving my M3 until the wheels fall off!

have you guys looked at the current e60 M5 and their prices? Since the F10 M5 is soon to be released (I think 2011), I'm sure a similar trend would follow with the e9x M3 and the F30/32

Remember, there will not be an F30 M3 sedan. So the e90 will have a niche there. Also, it's the last NA ///M3 for a while, so that will help too. I think it will fare well on the used market, but only time will tell.

Yes, but have you looked at comparable M3's? They're about the same price as the M5. In other words, they've held their value better. The M5's were tanking long before the introduction of the F10. Not sure why, but these cars shed value on the used market FAST.

That's a complex question that can only be answered with an in-depth look at your finances and your car buying habits.

My wife loves a new car every 2-3 years. She makes plenty of cash, so I don't mind indulging this. She needs a reliable car too, so knowing that it's new, in warranty and low mileage is peace of mind.

I'm losing the urge for a "new" car every 2-3 years. Maybe a different car, but it need not be new, per se. I'm probably leasing my last car for a long time. I plan to buy an F10 535 or 550 in 3 years, and drive that for quite a long time, assuming it is reliable.

If you plunk tons of cash down on a car, you could be losing out on other investments. If you can use BMW's money for 4-5 years at 2-3%, why not find a way to invest yours at 5+%? You'll make money over the long haul. Some people are anti debt, and that's cool, I get it. But if you are comfortable with fixed term secured debt, why not use someone elses money?

I plan to drive my upcoming E90 for 15 years at least. My E36 M3 is 15 years old now, and still my daily driver.

Just as we don't think of our house as an invenstment as much as a place to live, we pick the car we want to *drive*. Life's too short to give up on these joys, IMO.

Does it ever make financial sense to buy a $60k car? The only way to do it is if you aren't going to worry about things like depreciation.

I thought he was asking if SEDAN owners would feel worried, but he clearly meant E9x not E90. The question about the Sedan having a less desirable used market is legitimate.

Don't totally disagree re: the sedan but while it has clearly been a weak seller relative to the coupe and vert, there will also be a much smaller supply out there. I have not done the research but now are '08 and '09 sedan values holding up relative to the coupe and vert? Are we seeing a big drop in value for the sedans?

There was an LCI on the Sedan between 08 and 09 that will be a difference as well.

True, but was there not an LCI on the coupe and vert as well at some point? Sorry, I'm new to the M3! Just curious if the coupe and vert values have held up materially better than the sedan values have... At the end of the day it doesn't really matter to me. I knew I was buying a depreciating asset and accepted that. I love my E90 M3!!
