The squealing continued most likely because of the Hawk compound that was deposited on your rotors. You can try to bed your breaks again to see if that would scrub the Hawk compound off and deposit stock compound. I was also told you can lightly sand the discs and bed the stock pads in, but it would be hard to sand the inside surfaces. If you use different compounds in the rears, you might be altering your brake bias as the hawks most likely have a higher coefficient of friction than the stock pads do at the operational temp ranges.

Update?

I'm planning to use up whatever is left of the stock rubber this weekend, and then think about a track setup for next year. The guy I spoke with at Carbotech sounded friendly and informative. I'll let you guys know how the pads perform. Their pricing is reasonable: ~$350 total for the fronts and rears with BMW CCA membership discount.

Lucid,

Do you have any update on the Carbontech pads?

Yeah, I went through their medium compound front pads in a matter of a few hours. I am sure their more agressive compound would have lasted longer, but I am not buying from them again. While I was pushing the pistons back with a c-clamp, I literally ended up warping the back plate by simply twisting the small lever arm of the c-clamp. How much torque could I have really applied? That makes me question the stiffness of the backplates they use. Also, the wear pad sensor groove was filled with adhesive on the rears, so I couldn't attach the sensor, and cable tied it to the suspension, and then lost the little tensioner clip on the sensor due vibration. Guess what, they won't sell you just the tensioner clip. Annoying. I'm switching to RS19s.

Yikes!

Are you going to attempt this yourself? I've been going to Turner, but I've heard about Bavarian Performance Group in Winchester being a good alternative.

Changing pads is not hard once you learn what to unbolt, etc. It just takes time if you don't have access to a lift. It took me about 45 minutes per axle last time I did it. I'll do it myself again.

You will like the RS19's....the performance and wear is outstanding.

The sound, that is also outstanding on the streets. lol But it is worth it!

Is the noise in day to day driving tolerable?

I tracked my M3 and the stock pads were crap. The vibration issue while driving home made me feel like im driving a beat up chevy.

You turned out to be right about getting what you pay for on pads. I got the RS19s. Can't wait to try them out in a month.

Personally, I dont give a $hit what the mom & kids think of the squeeling, nor anyone else. The performance that you get out of them outweights anything else IMO. Just my $0.02

I don't care what others think, but the noise actually annoys me sometimes, but the benefits outweigh that.

My wife refuses to drive my car in the summer when the RS-19's are on it - noisy and grabby when cold.

Like that's a bad thing...

Hey Tim and others, I responded in another brake thread, but thought I'd put my comment here also.

I used pagid rs19s at VIR and they were great. It was a rainy weekend, so they didn't get the full heat of a summer track weekend. The prior 2 track weekends were on stock pads, which fade/melt/vibrate after the first session.

Mine don't make much sound, and I've kept them on 2 extra weeks just to see how they perform during normal driving. I'd recommend them to anyone looking for a good track pad.

Yes, I'll take pics and post a DIY, but it won't happen for another 10 days or so.

I'd rather eat a pile of crap than use Hawks. If you LIKE wheel corrosion and extreme rotor wear.....

Get the Pagids. Craig is getting them in later this week over at www.Rennstore.com.
I must 100% agree with the above:

just used the Pagid RS19 yellow at Laguna Seca today...wow what a difference to stock pads...all I can say is bite bite bite...somebody said boat anchors...I can second that. They are noisy like hell on regular streets, but I am willing to live with it. It also seems that they wear 10 times better than the street pads and they also don't overheat.

The close to $800 was definitely worth it, at least if you are serious about tracking your car

10-14 days before the Pagids arrive from Germany says Craig at www.Rennstore.com
We have to wait a bit -
