M3 vs. GT3 weight difference
So if I have the correct figures, when you come right down to it our new M3 will weigh about 600 lbs more than the current GT3. Is this correct? So if someone was inclined to spend the incremental money and send off to Dinan or some other after market firm, how much weight could be knocked off the 600lbs differencial? All estimates I realize, but I'm curious of the thoughts/opinions of the more knowledable folks here on what is achievable.

If the CSL makes it to our shores, that might be the better bet. But so far it doesn't look too good. Just curious. Are these to cars in the running for your next car?

You could probably lose 200lbs if you really wanted to:
Aftermarket Sparco/Recaro type seats Take out back seat Take out washer fluid and resevoir Take out all trunk carpeting and liners remove door panels Remove all stereo equipment including speakers Remove all cup holders, arm rests, and all other related items Lightweight wheels Lightweight aftermarket exhaust After all that you might be getting close to 200lbs in weight savings... I think it's more like 400lbs. Porsche quotes a "dry weight". The car minus fluids (correct me swamp if I'm wrong) It makes their cars appear light on paper, but it's not realistic, as no one runs their car without gas, coolant etc....

Being only a very "passive" P-car fan (love em, but would not shell out the $ to get the ones I would own) you would probably know better than me. I have heard in various places on line that they are very liberal with their weight numbers meaning they try to get them as low as possible. Do some more research and let us know! You could simply weigh your car as well. A good location is the local dump - accurate scales and it is free!

There was a time, a few months ago, where I thought I was going to get a used 997S and was buying a lot of Porsche magazines like GT3, 911, and Excellence.
I cant remember which magazine I read the article in but there was a comparison between the Caymen and I think old 78 Porsche RS. In the article they actually put both cars on a scale. The results for the Caymen actually surprised the Magazine and if I remember right the weight came to over 3300lbs. The whole reason the comparison was done was because the RS and the Caymen were boths supposed to be real close to 3000. I think the RS was actually less than 3000. Anyways, I wouldnt be surprised if the GT3 is heavier than what Porsche clames. The difference is probably closer to 400lbs. That is if the M3 is not heavier than we expect. Jason

Porsche states the Cayman (base model) weighs 2845 lbs, but when they put the car on their scales it was -- 3157 lbs!!! 312 lbs more than Porsche claims!! This Cayman came with NO options, just 18" wheels and floor mats. So a bare bones base Cayman weighs 3157. Also, April 2007 Excellence states the 997 GT3 weighed in at 3218 lbs with a full tank of gas. This test car had Nav and Ceramic brakes. I think the PCCB (ceramic brakes) save quite a bit of weight at each wheel. The rotors are much lighter, not sure how much though.... |

Porsche - M3 weight
In BMW's Training Manual they list EU weight for the regular 911 Carrera at 1,470. That's 185 kg or 408 lb. less than the M3.

You probably removed the spare, that's 50lbs that you cant remove from the M3. What he listed is around 250lbs.
