Q re paint fade - red car

Have ordered a Melb Red E92 and am somewhat concerned about the red paint fading over time, as red cars are prone to do. The car won't be parked for long periods in the sun, so it's not a huge concern.

Just wondering what people's experiences are with red paint on cars - BMW's in particular. I assume that as a premium car, the paint quality is such that this won't be an issue.

Melb Red is also a metallic paint - will this make a difference?

I don't see this as being an issue. If you care properly for the paint you will be fine.

Melbourne Red is a metalic paint with a clear over the top, it does not fade like the old enamel paints of years ago.

I wouldn’t leave your red vert in the Brisbane sun too long Watrob !

JK – as long as the car is regularly washed it should be OK especially with a sealant over the top to protect from fallout etc – try Zaino CS, Collinite etc etc

Congrats on the order!! Exciting stuff. Do the Performance Center Delivery if you have the opportunity.

Most colors fade to some extent, and if you don't believe me call your local BMW collision center and ask them if you can get a panel painted and replaced (rather than blended) for a 1 year old red BMW. The answer will be no, that you have to get it matched and blended, because it will have suffered fade. As a matter of fact, I saw a MR E92 not that long ago in a parking lot that appeared to have already suffered some fade, although it had not been taken very good care of.

Red is a gorgeous color, and if you keep it garaged most of the time, I think that your experience will be a good one, but don't think that it won't fade if it sees significant sunlight.

Good Luck!

i think this is quite true... red will fade just like any other color... white for example turns to a slightly off white color over time. and if the new body panel is not blended properly during a re-spray, it will certainly look out of place...

so the conclusion is no matter what paint you have, slight fading and discoloration can be expected. it would prob be more obvious in light colored cars compared to dark ones like jet black.

I don't know about MR E9x cars but I know a red 350z suffers from premature fading of it's mirrors if the car is not always garaged and away from the sun.. No other colors exhibit the same fading..

Thanks for your responses.

Apparently, red cars need to be waxed more often to maintain the red color - but only if they're left in the sun for long periods. As I won't be doing this much, it shouldn't be a problem.
