Muslims w/ dogs?

Anyone here who is a muslim and you have a dog as pet? I am curious because muslims in my home country hate dogs ...

They hate them that the government is organizing a "Catch the dogs contest"....basically the county that catches the most dogs will win...haha...kinda crazy i think....I don;t mind they start catching stray dogs..but to win the contest, these people will do anything.

They would: Dogs don't sleep on their right side and they have no aversion for pigs or pork (by-)products.

I've also noticed that dogs owned by non-arab families in general object to something in the arab diet. That might have something to do with it aswell.

Im arabic as well as muslim. Its mainly a cleanliness issue. Cleanliness is Godliness? My dad flipped out when I brought my first pup home but they didnt have a choice. Dogs are dirty hence one must not have them in their home. Whatever. Theyre cute.

Oh and PS People have them back home just outside not in the house and also dont forget there are also christians there who may have them too.

I dunno about you. But last time I checked cats lick their butt too. Not to mention they poo in a litter pan inside the house. Where as my dogs may lick their butts but they know the poo goes outside the house.

Plus cats are secretly planning to overthrow the goverment and take over the world.

i am Muslim and a dog is only permitted as watch dogs. YOU CANNOT HAVE them in your home what so ever. Pork is forbidden but thats a different issue. Dogs are not allowed because of their cleanliness. Also "Indeed, the Angels do not enter a house that has a dog or an image inside."

Keeping dogs inside the house without any necessity merely as pets was forbidden by the Prophet (saws). When we observe how lavishly the well-to-do treat their dogs while despising their relatives, and how much attention they give their dogs while neglecting their neighbors, we realize the wisdom of this prohibition. Moreover, the presence of a dog makes the household utensils unhygienic due to their licking of them. The Prophet (saws) said, "If a dog licks a plate (or pot), clean it seven times, of which one time should be with sand (or earth)." (Reported by al-Bukhari.)

sums up evrything.

Dogs aren't considered to be pure (in terms of cleanliness). Their saliva nullifies a Muslims state of wudhu (ablution), which is what Muslims perform prior to praying the 5 daily prayers. Also, if they lick your clothes you can't pray in them till the affected area is washed and any impurity is removed. If they lick a container used for food (by humans) it too must be washed a number of times etc. before being considered pure for use again.

Touching / petting is ok, so long as the dog's saliva doesn't touch someone/thing then it's fine. Naturally keeping a dog at home is a challenge since they're playful and lick everything :P

Keeping them as guard or hunting dogs is acceptable. Dogs kept for other than these purposes detract from a person's reward for their good deeds, according to a prophetic tradition. In other words, it is believed that a person will be rewarded, but not as much as someone that kept the dogs for reasons stated or didn't keep them at all.

Those are pretty much the main reasons, but I'll mention some more info to expound on the subject.

First: in another prophetic tradition the angel Gabriel refused to enter the prophet's (pbuh) house when there was a small puppy in his house. In Islam it's believed that Angels frequent houses where God is remembered and worship is frequent, and this is seen as a blessing. So having a dog would prevent the angels from coming in. This shouldn't be seen as "how can a dog prevent an angel from entering?" but the principle is simply that angels won't enter, not that they can't enter.

Second: while Islam permits having them, the reality is that a Muslim is usually involved in many acts of worship. There's the 5 daily prayers, keeping an area for worship and the house clean, reading the Qur'an, and so on. So this complicates the matter of keeping areas clean. Also, many people take things to an extreme when it comes to caring for their pets. If one realizes the amount of time and money spent on pet care, or on beautifying them or pampering them in certain services for pets, it's apparent that the costs add up and it can even be to the detriment of familial relations and responsibilities. Focusing on your family is a big thing in religion in general.

Third: Islam teaches respect and care towards animals. There is a story of a man that came across a thirsty dog in the dessert. He filled his shoes up with water from a well and gave the dog water and God forgave that person of his sins just for that act of mercy. I just added this to show that we don't "hate" dogs and that the religion's teachings encompasses a variety of topics, including such simple acts as this.

I'd rather be licked by a dog than to shake a guy's hand that hasn't been washed after he's used the bathroom.

I know, TMI, but the majority of guys that use the b/r just walk out after doing their thing. They leave the movie theater bathroom and buy popcorn to nibble on.

One more thing. If given the choice of being bitten by a human, cat or dog, do you know which is the least likely to cause infection?

a dog right? because it's a puncture wound.
that's what the ER Dr. told me when I got in a fight with a pitbull... needless to say, I don't exactly like dogs.

Interesting question... dunno the answer though. Wouldn't a cat bite be a puncture wound too? So what's the distinction in terms of infection?

LOL that is so true about cats!!

When I was in Bosnia and Iraq both countries were overwhelmed by stray dogs, mostly in part to not having a vet service to fix them, but I have seen many familys with them for pets too. I think having a dog has less to do with religion, and more to do with cultural and personal beliefs or whatever. There are plenty of ppl from every background that have pets, as well as peopl that do not like pets whether it be a dog, cat or guinne pig.

I thought it was a human bite that can cause the most infection.

> they protect my wife and baby.

Against what, exactly?

According to studies in the US and Europe. The risk of getting bitten by a German shepherd or a Doberman is more than five times higher than that of a Labrador retriever or a mixed-breed dog. Children are most likely to be bitten by dogs they know: in 77% of cases their own pet or the pet of someone they know.

The likelihood of a child receiving a dog bite decreases with age, with children 1 year old and younger most likely to be bitten. 73 percent of the pediatric dog-bite cases occur in children younger than 10.

About 5 million people get bitten by dogs each year in the US (2% of the population), most of the victims are children and roughly half of them are bitten in the face. 61 of these attacks happen in the home of the child.

There should be an explination behind these statistics as to WHY young children are bitten. It is not because the dog is evil or they should never be around a child because they will most likely bite them.

Dogs have a fight or flight instinct. They'll either run from a situation or fight. In most instances this is triggered by either fear or pain. Most dogs have a low pain tolerance and if they experience pain they immediately react. Very much like if you were to put your hand accidentally on a hot stove.

With that said children typically do not know how to interpet a dog. Especially infants who associate the dog with a cuddly toy in their room. They'll often try to restrain a dog, pull, sit, kick, bite or step on the animal. This will then trigger the fight or flight response from the animal.

Now some dogs have a much higher tolerance for pain and uncomfortable situations. These dogs are typically better suited for children. Other dogs like many small breed animals cannot deal with an enviroment like that.

My step-son, niece and nephew have "tormented" our dogs to different levels. Our 2 Great Pyr's have a high pain tolerance and will just remove themselves from the situation. My smaller dog has a much lower tolerance and needs to be watched around smaller children.

Anyhow, dogs have always been used to protect the family and that's one of the reasons I have my two Great Pyr's in the house. I travel often and I do not like the idea of leaving my family alone. I've been a victim or home invasion and I don't like the idea of strangers coming into my home unwelcomed. I prefer the option of a dog over a gun. As a gun can be used againist it's owner and there is a risk of a bystander being hurt when the gun is discharged.

I'm sorry but those two breeds you pointed out are working dogs. They have been breed to protect their owner and in order to do that. They are typically more aggressive than other breeds. Dalmations on the other hand have a high risk of biting their owner and family members do to their bloodline and breeding practices.

People need to understand why they want a dog and what that breed is used for. They shouldn't just go for a breed because it looks cool or they think it'll protect the house. It's annoying to see posts like these that are judgemental of dogs in general.
