Service Department Strikes Again

I was on my way to meet up with jsyang15 in Buena Park to buy his Volks. Driving by Irvine the M tells me I'm a quart low on oil. Stop by Irvine BMW and buy a quart and dude pours it in. I drive off and get to Buena Park. I notice smoke coming from the engine. I get out lift the hood and oh crap oil all over the engine bay. I remove the oil cap and it wasn't seated. Oil all over my right front wheel and dripping everywhere. Back at Irvine and they say will steam clean it. Let's see :/

They should do more than just cleaning up the mess. They owe you for your time and need to win back your trust. I would expect some kind of financial incentive. Also, I did a post years ago proving a fool proof method to ensure that the oil cap gasket is properly seated in the cap. Cheak it out. I always double check after dealer oil adds/changes since this is known design weakness.

Ok all cleaned up after 30 minutes. Still oil run off which is expected. They gave me a quart of 10w60 so we are good. I swear!

same thing happened to me there when I got my 30k mi service... I didnt see steam but next day I drove out my dad told me there was oil all over the garage floor where my car parked... I noticed it said i was down a quart so I went back and we popped the hood and there was oil everywhere... They told me they would fix it and gave me a loaner... When I came to pick up my car all they did was fill it up and didnt even clean it... I argued and they said they will clean it... so I had a loaner from them for two weeks... Kind of bs how they didnt clean it the first time.

The oil cap rubber seal sometimes gets twisted and causes it to leak. Same leak happened to me once when I added my own oil. But you'd figure the dealer would know about it and make sure to do it correctly.

No offense but you can't put a bottle of oil in the engine yourself? I would never stop by a dealer and have them come out and add it. You can walk up to parts, purchase a bottle and go pour it in and be gone. m3alabama maybe I did walk into parts and maybe I did buy the quart and maybe I asked for a rag to remove the cover and maybe the guy just did it for me. I figured I wouldn't bore you with the details but if you wanted to know pm me and I'll let you know. Maybe I'm a trusting customer that the job no matter how simple it is should be done right and I shouldn't have to throw on overalls and conduct an inspection. Also that in the past I received my M with a dime size dent to the metal after being in the shop for an engine problem that my helpless ass couldn't fix in my garage. Left a bitter taste. But you knew that because you seem to know how helpless I am.

It's more trouble than it's worth to drive to a dealer, talk to somebody, stand around while someone else pours in a bottle of oil. If mine needed a quart, I would get out of my car, open the trunk and get the bottle out and pour it in myself, and be on my way. It never ceases to amaze me the trouble people put up with because they a) can't pour an effin bottle of oil into their engine, and b) don't carry a bottle in their trunk. Personally, I wouldn't any more ask a dealer to top off my oil than I would pull in and ask them to pour my bottle of Chevron techroline in my gas tank for me or add 2 pounds of air to my tires or add windshield washer fluid. I would feel like an idiot doing that.

OP - sorry to hear about your troubles. i am finding out more and more dealers are becoming more and more careless with our cars and the service they provide. It's just sad. I am really rethinking my next BMW purchase based solely on my expereince with their service department. My current BMW might be my last sadly.

I agree sometimes you have to do things like adding oil yourself to avoid headaches and wasted time from the dealer, but there shouldn't be ANY excuse on why not to do these things 100% right the first time by the dealers.

Not just with M cars, but with any car in general. I think that most dealerships just dont care anymore. We just gotta get the coveralls back out...

It scares the crap out of me every time I go near the dealer. I let them do enough to keep my warranty going. Other than that I get a local guy that I trust to fix things if I can't do it myself.

Having said that the girls in the showroom are gorgeous. As is the coffee. The cars are nice too.

i am thinking if I buy another BMW again, I will be looking for one over 4 years old and has over 50k miles, so i will have no reason to drive by the dealer/stealer ever again. DIY and independant shops FTW!

I don't get it. Are you saying I'm incapable of pouring my own oil? And I should feel like a idiot for someone else doing it. I was in Irvine. Not my home town of San Diego so didn't know where to stop to grab a quart. Stopped at a Chevron before BMW but they didn't carry 10W60. Isn't amazing I even know what that is. Isn't true in Oregon you don't pump your own gas? I hope someone doesn't make mistake with your car and then you are considered an idiot for letting them provide shitty service.

Lesson learned yes I should carry an extra quart and a rag. Now only if I was smart enough to know how to pour it.

One of the more reasons I do stuff like add oil myself. Because I know it will be done correctly. It is not hard at all to add oil to our cars.

The other issue that arises is that even when the light comes on, you NEVER add the whole liter. Just another reason why you DIY and then you don't have to worry about these things. FYI, the only place to get oil for the M is from the dealer unless you want a specialty oil.

I went low on oil, bought some at a gas station. The attendant suggested he would help me by putting in the oil for me so I watched over him. As he was putting the oil in the plastic ring that breaks from the lid slid off the bottle and into the oil tank, he didn't even see this happen and I stopped him before he closed the oil cap. luckily the ring hung on one of the gears towards the top and we were able to fish it out. It's amazing how careless people are when it's not their own. I figured he's just putting oil in what could go wrong....haha

This morning I cleaned up the residual oil. The engine bay seems clean enough for me. Oh well lessons learned. Trust no mofo with your M. DIY if you can. Have an extra quart for emergencies. Trusting people to do their job is far too much to expect these days.

Well, I don't get what you don't get. I'm saying that if my add oil light came on and I found myself without an extra liter in my trunk for some reason and I was out of town and went to a BMW dealer to buy a liter, I would park in their parking lot, walk into their parts department, buy 2 liters of oil, go back out to the their parking lot, and add a liter myself, and throw the other liter in my trunk. Honestly, it wouldn't even occur to me to ask them to add it. It would be easier to do it myself than to deal with them. Why wouldn't I? Why ask them to do it? I just don't get it.
As far as gas in Oregon, I hate it. I always get out, open the gas cap for them and stand there and watch to make sure they hit the premium button, and by me standing there watching them, it makes most of them a little more aware and a little more careful putting the nozzle in. If I can finish, I do. If they are still hovering and want to finish, me standing there watching usually makes them more careful about spilling. Then I put my own cap back on to make sure it's tight. I don't have much choice, it's the stupid law here, but I do the best I can under the circumstances.
So anyway, what does that have do with adding oil? And why so sensitive. Show me where I called you an idiot. I said I would feel like an idiot standing there with a bottle of oil in my hand asking someone "can you add this for me". You are free to feel like whatever you want.
