Stereo display disappears when using polarized sunglasses?
From the people that have taken delivery, does the e92 M3 suffer from the disappearing stereo display when viewed thru polarized sunglasses? I noticed this in the 2006 e90s, but haven't been in a 2007 or a new M3 yet.

Every LCD is affected by this. Light travels through two polarizing filters with the LCD matrix in between. The light coming from the LCD is almost uniformly polarized at a certain angle, so polarized sunglasses will cause the LCD to turn black at the angle perpendicular to it.

Yes, and they also have an option on which way to orient the filters. Between the e46 and e90, they changed the orientation of the filters on their displays by 90 degrees. For my e46 displays to turn black, i have to turn my head sideways. On the 2006 e90, i have to turn my head sideways to see the display. I was hoping someone had convinced BMW that driving with your head in a vertical position was better than turning it sideways to read the displays.

It is likely their supplier changed for the LCD and thus the type of panel changed. The e46 display was probably a TN+film type and the e90 may be a MVA or PVA type which are better overall, but the orientation of the liquid crystals are different so the filter might have to be different.

I have a pair of polarizing sunglasses and they have little effect on viewing the iDrive display. These pictures are a bit rough, but the first is taken of the screen directly and the second is taken through my glasses (orientated as I would wear them). I would have to tilt my head 90 degrees to the side to make the screen unreadable.
