Why are the OEM 19's rarely sold/favored so much?

Yeah, as in all things, if everyone liked the same thing, the world would be a boring and unhappy place. To my eye, the 18 design is horrible, but as they say, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

The OEM's look better with spacers? Could someone please fill me on the type and size? What exactly do the spacers do? Are there any downsides, like alignment issues, uneven tire wear, etc?

Spacers are used to widen the stance of the car. They are PURELY cosmetic. Some say that the widen stance helps by making the car more stable in the handling, but I don't know if I believe that. According to all my research, they don't really help the performance of the car....And like I said before, they're just for looks.

If you're asking if they degrade the handling/performance of the stock suspension: I'd have to say maybe, maybe not. Most have told me that if they do have a negative affect, that it will be extremely slight and not very noticeable perhaps. Also, it depends on what size spacers you use. The more wider you go, the more riskier it is and it may put more pressure on the bearings and perhaps mess up the handling.

At the end, I really wanted to get spacers and also springs.....But I didn't want to mess with the stock suspension since BMW has put forth serious effort in making it magical and brilliant when it comes to handling. And they have succeeded in doing so, and therefore I don't wanna' mess a good thing up.

Love the 18's. Especially with my Graphite e92 M3. I also love the fat race tire look. I agree they have a more aggressive look than the oem 19's. I'll probably get a set of non-oem 19's in gunmetal or black and keep my 18's for track and when I get bored with the new wheels.

The 18" stock grey finished alloys only really suit a few colours, Silverstone Silver being one of them, but regardless of what others may think it's the 18" OEM which are best suited to the M3 and not the 19". They offer just as much grip, a sweeter handling and steering balance, easily the better ride and work out to be cheaper to replace.

The 19" stockers look great on my AW. They look better than what is seen in the pics. I've added spacers 15/10 and with the Dinan springs the handling is slightly better than stock. I've pushed the car both in stock and modded form and have to disagree with Nawaaz that the spacer/spring combo degrades the stock handling of the car. It only adds to it.
