Totally unqualified to suggest anything but out of thin air... Could worn engine mounts cause some type of alignment issue that would put stress on any tranny components?

It goes into limp mode and doesn't want to use the second clutch, causing long shift times. It also comes and goes, which to me is an indicator that it's not the actual temperature, but rather a faulty sensor.

Thoughts? Has anyone else ran into this issue? How much was the repair?

Thanks,

I have been getting this same error, in a similar fashion to you, for about a year now. 2012 M3 E93 (cabriolet) DCT. The car is a regular driver, not tracked, no abuse, no launch control. It's still on it's original tranny fluid. 58,000 miles.

When it started, I went to the dealer and they said I needed a software update, which they charged $300 for. They said this would take care of it. After about 3 months it came back again, and would happen at the oddest times, and not during periods of high revs or what would be considered stress on the transmission. I would get it in just regular driving, sometimes stop and go, sometimes on highway, often it would happen when I gave the car a little throttle, such as to pass or to accelerate to enter a highway, and it would always go away within 5-10 seconds.

Took it back about 6 months ago, they said they couldn't reproduce it and not to worry about it.

Just took the car in again this week because it keeps happening, and they took 3 days, called BMW NA, and came back and said it is a bad tranny temp sensor, which is not an expensive part, but it's around $2,400 in labor because they have to drop the transmission to get at the sensor to change it. My extended warranty won't pay for it because it's not considered an "Internally lubricated part" of the transmission.

Dealer also confirmed that the tranny is NOT overheating, that this is just a fault thrown because of this sensor. So now I'm stuck, do I keep the car and just live with it, hope it doesn't get worse or fail in some other way that damages the transmission, or fork over $2,400 to make this [MAYBE] go away?

Really frustrating....

follow up to this topic

Hey, my 335is has 62k miles and has the same DCT that the M3 has and i am having the same issues at the two people on this thread are having. I updated the software a couple times and for about a month or two it would be fine. Then the light would come on again.

I just want to know if anything else has come about for fixes to this issue.

I had one person suggest just changing out the mechatronics sleeve first and then see if it still is a problem, another said replace the whole mechatronics unit.

Transmission itself seemed fine when checked.

to my knowledge, the mechtronics unit is not sold individually. since that is the case, used parts dealers will not separate from a used transmission.

After sinking more than $8,000 into this issue, I still wasn't able to fix this. Technicians were baffled, from some of the best in my area to the BMW NA Advanced Support group. I ended up selling the car, I'm glad that I don't have to deal with it anymore.

If you're dealing with this issue, may your applicable god have mercy on your soul.

bummer. $8k could've covered a nice low mileage transmission, labor to swap it in, new gaskets, fluids and nice vacation. the old transmission could have been sold as well. which shop(s) in the bay area did you go to?

I got the sensor replaced in the bell housing of the transmission, but this didn't fix the issue. It's really hard for them to tell if the transmission is actually overheating or not. Also, you should check the other nearby sensors for similar temperatures before going down this rabbit hole.

I know...could've would've should've...if I knew back then what I knew now, I probably would've done exactly that, but hindsight is 20/20

sorry for your frustrations. i went through it last year with:

flush system
new clutches
finally had to buy a used transmission which finally fixed the issue. all has been well since. knock on wood.

Out of morbid curiosity, what was the total cost?

if you have checked the hardness for damage, changed the fluid and gone through the adjustment process through the ecu, i recommend just getting a used transmission.

Clutches were SSP $2,200
used trans $2,200

plus fluids and labor.. I have a really bad emotional attachment to my car, had I not I would have just traded it in BUT the SSP clutches grab really well.

I was very attached to my car as well, but with everything else going on in my life I decided to make a financially conscious choice, something that would stress me out less. I'm happy to hear you found a solution to it.

yeah i hear you. sorry, didn't mean to make it a "should have done this comment". i went through something similar myself and in the end went with a used low mileage transmission. even a used transmission is no guarantee, i still had to replace the harness with a brand new one, and a speed sensor ended up being bad. i probably had the transmission removed 2-3 times...ridiculous lol.

if I could have limped it to a dealer without getting the codes I would have traded it in, but the disks were damaged too bad or the mechtronics were not operating so I didn't have a choice. with the expense needed i just decided to repair it and keep her longer.

I agree, I was hoping a dct expert would chime in on some of these threads. My opinion it's either due to low fluid or excessive gear "kick down" in D mode. That doesn't help with the fix though....

Just a quick note - Mechtronics is sold individually. 3 years ago had to have mine replaced - $4,500 just for the part, all said and done ran $7,600 and 4 weeks. Had to get the part from Germany, where BWM only had one available and the next one was a 6 week wait.

Just had a message back from the last guy I took it to. He got hold of bmw technical and they said change fluid and filters and havr the software update but if it persists change the box. They say if swarf is inside then even after a rebuild it will probably happen again. Ive already had the fluid changed and a gearbox reset.

thank you for clarifying that and correcting me. that is expensive and would think a used transmission would be a cheaper alternative.

the larger coolers look more and more enticing.
