First HPDE , Might Be Hooked

Last weekend I took my car to the local track, which is nothing more than a go-kart/short bike track for some HPDE informal school/lapping. I've autocrossed with another car, but this was the first time in the M3. Had an absolute blast and now instead of considering minor cosmetic mods (blacked out gills and other crap), I'm now thinking of brake pads, camber, and tires. Strange how the priorities change.

Here's one of my 4 recorded runs - you can see that it isn't exactly a high speed track. I was definitely the slowest high-hp car out there that day but being my first event, kept the DSC on for self preservation. Lost quite a bit of time because of it too. Can't wait for the next session.

Glad you liked it and are hooked

You should really look at some of the basics like seating position and hand position. Did you get to ride with an instructor?

Wasn't really an instructor per se, but moreso somebody experienced with the track. Not a lot of critique. Any tips or links I can check out? The more I can prepare for next session the better.

It is funny how priorities change, I know the feeling. Get to a larger track and you'll be even more hooked. And get some actual instruction, it will help a lot.

Fortunately, a 2.7 km track is currently under construction fairly close to my house...

I've been looking into schools as well...finding the time for it is a whole other issue.

Can't wait for the next event <-- indeed!

(To expand on what CanAutM3 was trying to say,) ideally, you'd want your hands at 3 & 9 o'clock positions. Also, try to sit up closer to the steering wheel. When you go around fast corners, or the car slides (although, w/ DSC on, you needn't worry much about the car sliding), you don't want to be sliding on the seat to the sides wherein you can barely reach the steering wheel.

unfortuately, my seating position is limited by my height...I'd love to be a little closer. As far as the hands go, I've seen 10 and 2 recommended, though i'm a bit higher...need to fix that. how do you get grip on the m3 wheel at 9/3? i find the wheel bars prevent getting a good grip.

thanks for the tips, keep them coming!

I understand. You could try raising up just the back rest (upright section) so that your shoulders are closer to the steering wheel.

Glad you enjoyed it. It's going to get expensive fast if you are hooked - it's all downhill from here
