I took my car for my first autocross and definitely experienced this. I felt like a noob shifter. I was redlining, and couldn't get it into 2nd gear. Boy it did not feel good. It happened all 4 tries, but when I tried it on the normal street, I was find. Maybe it is my noobness in MT shifting, or maybe I haven't really broken her in even though I have 10k on the odometer. We'll just have to wait until the next autocrossing/track days.

I thought the same thing until I recently drove the M DCT. on S5 it did exactly what I do in my 6MT, rev match the hell out of the engine to extract that glorious sound. I was even rev matching the 2-1 shift at 60-65 km/h!

I absolutely convinced me to option it on my next M3. you should take a second look, I know I came out of my little test drive quite blown away by the DCT.

Er, no.

My E36 M3's did not have this problem.

My E30 325is do not have this problem.

My 996 GT2 did not have this problem.

The M3 clutch sucks. It's way too soft for no reason (E36 M3 clutch was perfect, don't know why they have to ruin it by making it no feel soft), the 1st to 2nd shift is just very difficult to execute fast and smooth, certainly not like any Porsche GT cars, the E30, or the E36 M3.

The E9x M3 manual transmission would have been perfect had they kept the smoothness and the clutch feel of the E36 M3.

Agreed. This issue is the main reason I went back to the DCT on my e93. I like the clutch/shifter better on the e46m3 and my son's 135i. The vagueness of the clutch was also present in my e39 540i years ago. BMW seems to do this on their v8 manual cars.

Guys, I had my CDV removed last night. My tech asked if I wanted him to remove it and I told him it doesn't have it or if it does it's a dummy like what everyone else around here says. Well guess what? My car had a CDV and he showed me the part after he removed it. There's a pinhole in the center not a pass through like everyone is saying. After he took it out I felt a difference right away.

Also to the OP, the weighted ZHP knob helped a little with the notchiness.

Are you sure he didn't take out the 2008 Clutch Spring? I thought our cars don't have a CDV??

Clutch Spring and CDV are two very different things. Not sure how it could be mistaken I thought the same about our cars not having a CDV and he proved me wrong.

I have a picture of it on my phone. I'll post it when I get home tonight.

I don't profess to know about these kind of things, but it's been confirmed that the car does not have a CDV. Maybe your tech isn't very knowledgeable? At any rate, I'd be curious to know what he actually did and how the shifting feel has improved. I take my car in soon and would like to have them take the clutch spring out at the very least.

He showed me the part and I took a pic of it. Looks just like the top pic in the link in the thread you pointed out.

Also my tech is a personal friend of mine so he wouldn't BS me. As for him being knowledgeable, he's been with BMW for 10yrs and before that Ferrari. He can do an engine swap in a day and tranny swaps in 3 hours (the book calls for 6).

I removed my clutch spring soon after I picked up my car 2 years ago. From what I remembered removing the spring helped the clutch pedal return smoother. After having the CDV removed, the clutch pedal feels very consistent all throughout. The pedal also feels lighter (or it could just be in my head )

Also keep in mind my car is an early model 08 so maybe BMW changed the CDV for later year cars? All I know is my car HAD one.

I think I will have my tech remove the valve (in whatever form it is in) and the spring. I hope that addresses my dissatisfaction with shifting feel.

Good luck.

Ask to keep the CDV valve and report back if yours has a pinhole or not.
