Dinan Stroker Test Drive

Well I got a chance to drive a Dinan S3-R today. The car had about 8k on the ticker but I'm not sure at what time the motor was dropped in. So the big question is .....how was it? Let's just say I'm a Dinan fan through and through. But there's no way in hell I would pay 25k for the motor. I was all jazzed up and set up for the thrill ride that never came. Upon starting the car I was expecting massive thunder....well that didn't happen. In fact it sounded identical to my car. So I proceeded to head towards the street. I put the DCT in S3 so that the engine had some warm up time plus that would set me up for the big moment when I pushed the M button. Now the moment, I hit the button and immediately notice the increase in rpm's. The one thing I will say about this motor is, it hits the upper power band before you can blink. That was impressive, but the overall power gain was something I just didn't feel. Now maybe it's because I'm not driving a stock car, I'm not sure. But the one thing I'm sure of is this; I'll continue to be a Dinan guy but I'll mod my cars piece by piece. The stroker motor may be a tad bit overrated unless you are driving a totally stock car. By the way, I went to test drive the car for a forum member. Here's the link if anyone is interested..............Phil

How do you know that is a real S3-R? Shouldn't the engine bay look much different than that?

Edit: I guess not -

Based on the pics that I saw the engine looked the exact same, I thought dinan would at least make the engine cover look different. The price of the car seems pretty reasonable thinking that 74k for 25k engine in it and only having 8k miles on it, but honestly why wouldn't you just supercharge it for half the price?

See anything polished in this picture? That is the only difference I noticed while under the hood............Phil

///M Ryder, do the modifications you have now void your warranty. That's what I'd like to do just for the throttle response and sound. Intake, exhaust and tune.

That's a bummer...

Has anyone driven the RD version and the Dinan to see how the 2 compare?

No, Dinan gives you the coverage if your service department starts to act a fool.......Phil

looks like the full package. I'm sure if you give the VIN to Dinan, they'll verfiy. You know I think 74k is a great bargain.

Dinan adds black valve covers. That is the only aesthetic difference on the engine.

I was looking at purchasing the car. What was not said was that the car looked a little worn for only 8kmiles. That kinda scares me. I also talk to someone that knows the car and the car was "curbed" as he said. he said it was only suspension damage but did not know how it was fixed.
Ryder noted that the front right of the vehicle looked a littel weid like repaired or something like that. so I am not jumping on it for 74k at this time.

Yeah I didn't give full disclosure on the car. I only sent that info to buschy since he was shopping the car. But I'll tell you it's not worth 75k............Phil

Wow, so he sold it. I spotted that car several months ago and posted in the TX spotted thread. It had aftermarket wheels on it at the time but that's definitely the one. Scott@bmwhn knew based on my description that it was an S3-R but the owner never chimed in at all.

I was going to say that I wonder why he sold it so soon but based on the posts above, I'm guessing that it may have something to do with whatever damage was done to the car. I guess we'll probably never know...

now that you mention it, someone with an s3-r did loose control on a track a while ago... (not sure if it was the same car that was worked on by BMW north)

Wasn't it not too long ago that a forum member here "curbed" his car and somehow managed to ruin his engine by getting metal shavings in it? He was going to replace it with a Dinan stroker because insurance was paying and letting him keep the old core. Think this was that car?

You're right. But if it is in fact this car then 62K would be more appropriate. Right?

Lol that thread was just bumped up a few days ago...he said he never got the Dinan kit installed because it turned out there was nothing wrong with the motor. Now he says the car is acting up and it is back at BMW. So no it is not that guys car. I also think his car was MR.

here some tidbits. The guy traded it for a porsche and has way to much money, I was also told that the guy said he wants to do another Dinan M3.

My guess is after the slight damage, he fixed it and sold the car. I dont blame him, I cant say that I would keep a repaired car if I had to much money.
