I was in the BMW Toronto showroom on Saturday looking at an M3 coupe on the showroom floor. The sticker for the car showed a $1,000 gas guzzler tax in the lease cost calculation. |

Well i picked my car this afternoon and confirmed the $250 fuel consumption tax and no green levy.If there is a mistake on the taxes I guess I could end up cutting a cheque later, but of course I usually end up doing that every April anyways

I did some research, as I have been charged the $1200 gas tax fee or green fee. I called two dealerships in Ontario yesterday and got two different answers. So I went on the Governmant Green tax site and here is what it said.
The tax is based on a weighted average of L/100Kms. You take 55% of the city rating and 45% of the highway rating and calculate the average. If it is over 13 L/100kms and under 14, there is a $1000 green fee levied. Based on my calculations using U.S. fuel ratings (I have not seen any for Canada yet), the M3 Coupe falls in that range and therefore, is subject to the $1000 fee. The CDN ratings are quite a bit higher than the US ones at least in highway rating. In the Canadian M3 brochure that I just got this AM it shows 9.7L/100 for highway, but I cannot recall the city rating

Thanks. I just called my dealership and they gave me the same numbers you just did. Therefore, I should not be charged the green tax. They are going to get back to me.

I agree. Do not pay. I am waiting to hear back from my dealer and will be very annoyed if they say I have to pay. If so, I will escalate to BMW Canada Customer service. Will let you know what happens.

Okay, so here is the latest. I called BMW Canada customer service directly. They took my question, investigated it and just called me back.
Direct from BMW Canada - M3 Coupes are NOT subject to the green tax, only the M3 Convertible is. Just left a message with my dealer to have my invoice reduced. |
